Why no ballistic tip .22 lr?

I was shooting my friend's .17HMR today, and wondered:
Where's MY flex tip ballistically superior .22 lr round? Why do they get to have all the fun? Is there a reason why you can't take a 30-36g. hollowpoint and shove a pointed plastic tip on it? Would this work?:AR15firin

Work for what??? What advantage would anyone have over a normal .22lr bullet? They are not fast enough to help expansion, and too expensive to make into match ammo that would beat Tenex or R-50. Its just not needed.

I don't know about that. Even standard velocity hollow points expand very nicely at 100 yards. Expansion isn't just about speed, it's mostly about bullet shape.
Ogive (pronounced 'Oh-Jive') -- Actually .22 lr HP's would probably expand/mushroom better then a .22 lr equiped with a BT would at 22 lr speeds. The BT's need the extra velocity to force the polymer tip into the bullet, which causes the bullet to deform. :bthumb:

The .22 JSB 16gr Predator Poly mag Air Rifle pellet has a plastic ballistic pointed tip and is Extremely effective @ around 900 feet per second muzzle velocity,

http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/zoomed_model.pl?model_id=343&type=P

so I think speed and shape should not be the problem.

Demand makes the market and seems to me there is no demand for em. Call your favorite ammo manufacturer and ask them why they are not available.

Maybe take a poll on who would buy or try and use em if/when they become available! I would and believe they would be a big money maker seller, the poly mag air rifle pellet is a high demand seller and is available in .177 and the big .25 caliber air rifle pellet. Even Gamo pirated the design and a patent lawsuit is in progess at this time!

The differance between a air rifle pellet and a .22 LR is the alloy of the lead the air rifle pellet is softer and at 16 grains MUCH thiner thus the expantion at low speed

I say this cause I can sqeeze a air rifle pellet between my fingers and distort it and almost make it flat..I cant do that with a LR bullet

Guess the "heel" design dictates a lot about how the rest of the bullet is made.

http://www.corbins.com/design.htm

I think it may be possible for the manufactures to put a poly tip in the nose of a heeled bullet. The Eley EPS uses a tiny protruding tip (made from the same alloy as the bullet) that seems to improve aerodynamics.

But if they were able to BT the nose what would the cost/improvement ratio be?

Too windy to fish so I diddled around with my new drill and some minimag hp. It knocked the accuracy off some but they performed like a good cf big game round. I then drilled some deeper with a smaller 1/16th" drill bit and got what I was looking for; almost total destruction of the bullet on impact in my water jug tests; little shards of lead similar to the 17HMR VMAX. Too bad there aren't any dumb prairie dogs here for meat testing. I scraped the crater edges with my thumbnail for reliable feeding in my semi auto and to keep lead debris out of the chamber.
Just messing around being a kid again. :)

I did something like this when I first joined, I used a dremel with some small bits. They came out alot more precise than your picture, no burs, more consistant expansion cup size, and I also used Federal bulk and Winchester Xpert. It was fun, but I only tried them in my 6" pistol, they shot high and were extremely innaccurate. Maybe 4" groups at 10yards. It is kinda tempting for small game:rolleyes: I still have a few in a spare mag for "just in case" if a .22 is all I have.

Those homemade tipped bullets are pretty cool. But I suspect a Hornady type bullet might not load properly in quite a few guns. For the 30-30 Marlin they make an accessory part for if you have trouble loading the Hornady stuff. I have a box but haven't tried them yet. Interesting question though since the Hornady tipped 22wmr is the most accurate ammo I have tried in my guns.

I was at fish camp and could use only what I had. Some were drilled a tad crooked also, but it was hard to true it up when you're hanging on to the slug to keep it from spinning in the case tightly clutched in my finger tips. Pretty sure the BC got lop-sided in some. :) I didn't save pix of the deeper ones as the depth couldn't be realized by viewing the pix.

Does anyone think that the ammo manufacturers haven't tried this on 22LR ammo? I just don't see the performance edge, that 22LR case is so small, the only way you get to centerfire like velocity is with a much lighter bullet, hence the 17m2.

Now, if powder technology gets to the point where a 22LR cartridge can drive a 40 gr bullet at 2200 fps, then a polymer tipped round will make sense.

It reminds me more of a PDA stylus since some of the more expensive and better ones have bright orange tips.

I always wanted to get a tin of those red pointed Gamo pellets, since they look cool. I use cheap pellets like the Daisy pointed and Crosman Destroyer EX I found at Walmart for 2 bucks a tin (250).
