Stopped by last week out of the blue at a local pawn shop and checked out some of the old and unusual ones they had. Passed on a bolt action shotgun for a cute little $119 semi-automatic rifle. I'd heard of the name, but that's about it - called a buddy to tell him of it as he was looking for something like that. Turns out he passed on it, and when I went back 3 hours later it was now $99 - so I grabbed it.

Brought it home a few days later (Illinois waiting period), gave it a good cleaning and it seems like it'll be a fine shooter. Said buddy has a scope he'll sell me cheap, so I'll be able to add that. BTW, what do you call the rails when they are literally just grooves in the receiver body? Warne, dovetail?
The bolt mechanism is interesting to remove and reassemble - I may make a video specifically addressing this as the ones on youtube aren't the best, and I see a lot of folks have issues with re-assembly.

Before I cleaned it I did a test fire in the garage into a big chunk of wood - did fine for the 3 test rounds I had. This is my first semi-auto rifle, and I was surprised how smooth and instantaneous it seemed. I barely caught a glimpse of the ejected shell out of the corner of my eye.

I was given a box of parts that was a Squires-Bingham Model 20 years ago and I cut it down for my daughter when she first started learning to shoot. I shortened the barrel to 16.25 inches and the stock to an 11 inch LOP. She has enjoyed it ever since and it works just as well today as it did when I first reassembled it. It is an 11mm dovetail and the rear cap can be unscrewed and the recoil spring, guide rod, and bolt are easily removed for cleaning. Just know that the recoil spring is fairly stout and have a good hold on that cap as it will launch parts if you don't.

I have one of these, bought back in the '80s when some local big-box store went out of bidness. I think I paid somewhere around $50 for it brand new. Never actually shot it until I decided to try to get it into Vincent's "Super Stock Club" about 20 years ago. I put a gun-show peep sight on it and shot the groups shown below.

Looks like you got the "Deluxe" version--yours has checkering and a fore-end cap. Mine doesn't.

IIRC, it was surprisingly accurate and worked pretty well. I don't care much for its looks and have given some though into trying to make it into a sorta-kinda-somewhat "Johnson Rifle" lookalike/tribute.

Knormal....thanks, but I may have a line on one...

I will post pics soon, but mine is also a "deluxe" verson...as it has white line spacers...however there isnt a separate piece of wood at the forearm...my stock is 1 piece...with just a white spacer cut in...also I stripped the wood and to me it looks like Philippine mahogany!...

Interesting on the wood - I am thinking about refinishing mine too as it has some scuffs, and yep, mine's just a painted white line instead of that nose cap. lol

In my area, Kresge's didn't sell guns but KMart did.

I bought mine at some long-closed regional KMart-like place I can't remember the name of. This would have been somewhere around 1985-86, best as I can recall. I bought it because the joint was blowing it out at a hella price (they were closing down), and I thought it would be good "swap fodder" at some point in the future. It sat in the back of my closet, unfired for nearly 20 years, until I dug it out just to see how well it would shoot in "Snake's Great Cheap .22 Ammo Shootout," and was shocked at how well it shot.

Somewhere along the line, I bought a Norinco JW-14 semiauto .22 rifle. It's the same basic gun, too! ;)(y)
