Apology beforehand if this has been asked before. Friend and I were comparing notes on a Marlin 882 I recently acquired with same complaint of hard trigger on it and friends Mossberg 640. Short search to find a fix for the 882 but neither of us can find a solution for the 640. Anyone know of a fix?
Thanks, Joe

You run into the problem of the parts being surface hardened. You can remove that hardening when you try to do stoning of the parts. This will give you a lighter trigger at first but will become dangerous at some point. These were not designed to be target triggers which was 3lbs when till the 1960's. As kids, we just learn to pull a heavy trigger. Now, everyone wants 1lb or less on every firearm they own. Learning to shoot well with a heavy trigger is a skill all need to learn.
The old saying: "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear" still rings true.

Brownells sells a surface hardening compound...

Brownells sells a surface hardening compound that works exceptionally well. So if you decide to stone or polish any of the sear do a file test, to make sure that the hardened surfaces haven't been cut through. Definitely don't want soft metal on the sear surfaces.
God Bless, Frank.

Wanted to improve mine, so I found a 640 trigger group on Ebay to retain a functioning stock trigger. The Ebay trigger was much better in feel and crisp but as heavy. I tried shortening the hammer spring removing a fraction of a coil at a time and checking pull and firing. Got down to 4 pounds and stopped there. I still goes bang every time. KM
