For the most part, I tend to scope my rifles with traditionally-mounted scopes (above the receiver), but I've come to the opinion that some rifles are simply better 'in the field' with a low-magnification handgun / IER scope mounted forward of the receiver.
For example, I've done some jackrabbit hunting with my Marlin 70P 'Papoose' (posted below).
With its relatively small 2x IER Leupold, the rifle really lends itself to fast handling while still having enough precision for the longer shots.
I do have nicer rimfire rifles, but for field work it really is my favorite rimfire, and a major component of that is because of how the scope is configured on it.
Since then, I've set up a few more rifles in a similar fashion. It's not the answer for every rifle, but I do believe that on some of them it ends up being a very nice and handy configuration for field work.

I used this M1 Carbine (w/ just the iron sights) in a 2-day defensive carbine class last year.
I enjoyed it so much I'm going to do it again this year - really looking forward to trying out its new scope setup.
