A good friend has a 40X he wants to sell and I need a fair value. I’m interested in the rifle and neither of us knows what a fair price would be.

Looks to be a nice late 40XB with a standard barrel, although I cannot tell for sure. If it is, there were not many that came that way, as most XB’s were heavy barrels. The only thing I see that detracts from the rifle is the rear peep sight. Not that there is anything wrong with the sight, just that it’s not the correct one for th rifle. Note that the stock has been relieved to accept the mounting. These rifles usually had Redfield sights, that fit without having to relive the stock.
I sold a XB standard barrel early this year without sights for 1800.00 It was a really nice rifle that showed little use, not collectors grade however.

When a seller does not know the value it should be up to him to research and find a price.
Imagine you buying the rifle for $1000 and he later believes he should have gotten $2000 . . . how much is the friendship worth?
I had a friendship disintegrate over a $2.00 entry fee. Pity!
10 years ago I bought a 40XB for $1350. This year I bought two more for double and triple that but it is just money.
