Drove from Atlanta to Anniston this morning to examine the Anschutz 54's and Biathlon 1872's and 1472's in their racks. As always the staff was very helpful, especially Tom. On my previous visit I had considered a 40x but bought a Win 52c.
Today Tom showed me six 40x's that were in excellent condition. I bought this one. For a rifle from the late-50's it does not seem to have been used much.

The Biathlon rifles were well-used. They looked to have been modified by former users. To me they were "project" rifles. One sold while we were there. They were the early bolt-action models not the later Fortner models. It would be a long ride from Oklahoma not knowing what would be on the racks when you arrive.

I was fortunate enough to have been able to buy a couple of nice 40XBs & one beat-up old 40X from CMP back in 2004-05 when they were selling all the rifles that had been recalled from schools with ROTC programs to qualified Hi Power shooters. I was so pleased to have the opportunity to experience owning & shooting these rifles - if it weren't for the CMP's very reasonable pricing on them, I'd probably never have had the pleasure. I used one of the 40XBs to help work on my prone position, with a Weaver KT15 scope mounted - it was such a heavy rifle with that truck axle bbl that it was easy to see the std vel SK & Eley bullets arcing back down into the paper targets at 100yds through the scope. Eventually, I traded a CMP H&R M12 to Mac Tilton for a very nice used Anschutz 1611 prone rifle, which had a stock very similar to the Robertson H&H prone stocks on a couple of my CF LR prone rifles. That made it an excellent trainer for the mid range & long range prone matches I was shooting out at the CRC at Byers, Co. & Whittington Center at Raton. The ease of loading single rounds in that 1611 compared to trying to get a round set on the feed rail in the 40XB while slung-up makes it easy to understand why Anschutz took over the smallbore market here in the States, even though we had such wonderfully accurate Remmy 40X & Winchester 52D rifles.

Congratulations. I picked up two XBs (+ 52C/52Ds/M12s) at the CMP over the summer. Years ago I had the pleasure of primarily shooting a 40XB and a 52D, which is why I focused my purchase on the 40XBs.

The stock on one of the 40XBs that I bought had been cut way down when they installed a Freeland adjustable buttplate, which left the length of pull short for my taste. Fast forward a few weeks, a new 40XB stock was listed on ebay and the price worked for me. This is a picture with the new stock installed.

Also, you indicated that your drove out to Anniston from Atlanta. My drive is from Kennesaw. Small world

Decided to brave the Georgia week-before-Christmas weather and headed to Wilson Shoals this morning. The 65-70 degrees with mostly sunny skies and no wind kept faint=hearted shooters away. For the first hour I was the only shooter. I had mounted a Vortex 4-14x40 AO scope that I assumed needed sighting-in. These were my first two five-shot groups at 25 yards.

I shot several ARA targets with the 40x and three other rifles. This was my best. Need to look into the 40x trigger; mine breaks at 2+#'s.

The 40X is a keeper. Might need to return to CMP and acquire another.
