Never knew about these before couple days ago when I saw one for sale on GB.
Got my attention as they seem interesting and truthfully, I'm a sucker for another old 22.
Anyways, they come in both 22lr and 22 short so which caliber is more desirable from a collection perspective and from a practical use for small game hunting?
Actually, I would guess the 22lr is probably more powerful but the short is quieter so which would you pick for say squirrel and similar small game?

The only thing I sometimes forget that the 74 should not be cocked with the safety engaged or it can jam up. So if I take it out I have to look up is it safety engaged or safety off that's the problem? Maybe the answer is to take it out more often until the knowledge is ingrained in my head. But most 74 variations seem to be inexpensive as far as Winchester models compare. I only have the one 22lr made in 1941 and it is a natural pointer. It looks clunky compared to the 63 but is a surprisingly comfortable handling rifle.

They are fun guns. With the long barrel version, mine is quiet even with HV 22lr and shoots far beyond it's pay grade with cheap Aguila ammo. Many ground squirrels were dispatched earlier this month with it. I have it paired with a Lyman All American 8x scope. The metal isn't pretty but the wood

is outstanding for a gun built in 1941.
Those are arrow shaft speed loaders laying on the blue foam pad.
