Which rifle?

I'm in the mood for a new (to me) rifle. New or good condition used either way. I've always thought a Remington 552 is a great looking rifle. I've recently been reading they are dirty shooting and a pain to dis/re(assemble).

So I'm looking for suggestions of a nice rimfire that isn't a 10/22. Actually both bolt and semi as I want to get one of each. Suggestions?

I would (and have) taken a 552 or 550 over an SA. My SA wasn't 100% reliable with a range of ammunition, clearing jams is a royal PITA, and they tend to eject into the crook of your arm.....

I don't think Ive ever experienced a malfunction of any sort with either of the Remingtons. Wonderful rifles, no dirtier than any other .22. Not the easiest to clean, but they seldom seem to need it. Couple drops of oil on the bolt and your GTG for a looooong time.

In fact, Ive dozens of bolt action .22s, but my only remaining semis are an AR22 and a 550-1.

For a nice all-round bolt gun, hard to go wrong with a CZ 452-457, out of production but not hard to find.

Another vote for the CZ512.

I feel like it’s a “finished” rifle. Fit and finish are fantastic. Mine has been 100% reliable and surprisingly accurate. Takedown is very clever. Shares magazines with the 452/455/457 rifles. And they’re not getting any cheaper.

Just had mine out the other day. Always a blast.

Depends what you are into. My funnest 22 rifle. Hk g36 .22. I added the integrated scope rail for $60 and bipod for $11. Great gun and very accurate. Takes real g36 parts ($$$$) or airsoft parts. $518

Funnest 22 subgun. Stribog .22, well built and very accurate. Likes to shoot fast. $544 on sale

I also like the hk mp5 .22 when it was $318 but now that it’s higher it’s not as attractive. This pic from internet. Not nearly as accurate as the Stribog. Stribog trigger is amazing, this trigger is typical mp5, mushy and long.

3lb without scope and forward grip (but with suppressor) single shot toy. About $250ish

These are kind of fun inexpensive toys. I like shooting it one handed actually. This pick from internet. I think $170 may be the cheapest you’ll find it but more likely $240. Get an extra 22 mag cylinder so you can shoot 22lr and 22 mag out of it.

Thanks for some good input so far. I appreciate it.

I'll probably lean toward a bolt action first. I've got a couple of semi already. I'll just be having fun doing dumb things like can I cut the outer ring on the target at all the hour positions. Maybe the same on the rings moving toward center. Or how many (almost) through the same hole. Or whatever. Budget, hopefully OTD in mid-3 digits or so. For just the one rifle. I'll do it again in a few months for another.

Fun rifles… if you want something “tactical” in the semi auto variety the 15-22 by S&W is relatively inexpensive (used on gb like $250). Fun guns that you can tinker with. Or the Sig 522, more expensive no longer made but an excellent rifle. I’ve been on the hunt for a new bolt action. What I’ve read thus far and see is the Tikka, Cz or the Ruger Precision/American seem to be the best bang for your buck. It would be dependent upon your purpose and budget though. All of that to say don’t leave military surplus rifles off the table! Lots of history, collectibility and fun shooting as many shoot incredibly well. Mossberg 44, 42 or H&R 65’s, etc.

Agree about the 522. I have the 15-22 and it feels like a plastic nerf toy and mags feels even worse. I don’t like it but the only reason I keep it is cuz I have a binary trigger in it which shoots at a rate of 600 rpm. On the plus side, it is reliable though and takes AR triggers.

One of the fun things about .22 is you can blast away and not worry about ammo cost too much. 600 rounds per minute in other calibers you would hardly shoot it unless you have lots of disposable $. With a .22 who cares, blast away and have fun.

Well, getting back to the OP, there is a solution and it is this. For $480 shipped, plus tax I'm sure, it is way too good a deal to pass up. And I have a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10x50 that has been waiting for a new home. It's maybe 25 years old so not their latest greatest but I think it will work with this even if possibly not the ideal choice. I'll need a mount as the A.R.M.S. it is in is probably not the right choice for it. And a nice case to keep it in. So I figure $600-650 all in.

The speedmaster is easy to disassemble and clean, so i dont know what source was contrary to this fact. It is not the best rimfire in the world though, the trigger pull is long and creepy, but she always goes bang and is reasonably accurate.
Anschutz makes some fine rifles though, check out the 54 action rifles and the 1761 series to see if either suits your needs. Good luck with whatever decision you make and happy shooting.
