What about Aguila Super Extra 40gr HV PLRN?

I've been reading around here how my former favorite bulk pliinking ammo (which had always served me well, being both highly reliable and "reasonably accurate for the price"), Federal 36gr CP-HV-hollow points in 500/525/550-round cartons, has become garbage compared to what I bought before Obama's 1st term. And, I'm down to my last unopened old-azzed carton...

Sadly, I'd already purchased a case of the current (equivalent?) Federal bulk ammo (with "Champion" on the 525rnd cartons) a while back, before reading of the current ammo situation. I still haven't had a chance to shoot any of it, but I'm still looking elsewhere for a "decent" copper plated/washed/whatever you wanna call it, bulk ammo at a great price, which brings me to...

I found some Aquila SE 40gr HV PLRN bricks going for a fair price, but I have no experience with any of their ammo. What do you .22lr ammo shooting experts know about this ammo, including if there's anything I need to be worried about? I'm not looking for it to be "Match Quality or Accurate", just a good, reliable, "halfway-accurate" - plinking ammo, to replace the old Federal bulk I was happy with and so used to... Oh yea, I'm looking at buying a lot of this ammo if I don't hear bad things about it, and I do mean A LOT!
Please, save me from making another mistake, if I'm about to...?

Thanks in advance!

Maybe we in Norway have the old Federal 525 boxes, but they are labeled "Champion". But the ammo works fine and the presicion is good for that type of ammo.

When it comes to the Aguila, the brand is "new" in Norway after it recenty came back after 15-20 years on the marked.

I am going to test some types this spring to see if it is good ammo or not i my guns :)

My old carton does not have "Champion" on it. Just something to the extent of: 22LR Copper Plated Hollow Point, 525 round Value Pack...
I wonder if you have the newer stuff there?

The Aguila is fine ammo. Ely primer, better, and pretty consistent , it’s gonna shoot a little low compared to the Federal you have zeroed in, but a couple of clicks up and it will be spot on.

Where did you find a good price, around hear it’s $26 a brick.

PS , I like the SV better, more consistent and no copper.

Thanks Toomany22s!

I also read a few reviews using Google before making an order.

Just to be safe, especially with the potential audience here, who may go nuts ordering this ammo given how freaking Cheap I found it, I just placed an order for 20,000 rounds (40ea, 500rnd bricks)!
Myself, I don't like excessive lead build up and as such have always preferred copper plated/washed/something ammo...

Would you believe I found it at $17.99 per 500rnd brick???

I live within an hour of the store here in NV, so I'll have no shipping charges. For anyone ordering, they do have a "shipping calculator" once you get some ammo into your shopping cart, or so I was told a few minutes ago.

Ammo Warehouse is the place, they have both an east location and one here in the west. Direct link to the ammo in question (at the west location) is here:

What a killer deal you got!

My fear right now is the high likelihood of our next president being a democrat or other non-republican and all of us facing yet another major ammo shortage and more insanely high pricing. I failed to see this before Obama's 1st term, and am taking Zero Chances this time around. Luckily for me I had just enough ammo to get by with, but could have easily used more.

If I truly like this ammo, I may buy a lot more as long as it's still available and this cheap. I'm going to do my best to blast thru as much of this as I can, as soon as I can...

I blew it...
I picked up the ammo the other day, went from the store straight to a public desert shooting range, then proceeded to shoot the newer Federal bulk 36grn HP ammo (with "Champion" on the boxes) that I bought last year (but hadn't shot before). The good news, the "New Federal" ammo shot perfectly. It shot every bit as good as my old (pre-Obama 1st term) stash, Federal-36grn-HP ammo. Keep in mind I only shot 64 rounds thru a brand new (1st time shooting it) tube-fed Marlin XT-22 TSR stainless steel bolt action rifle. I'll feel even better about the newer Federal ammo after I shoot it thru one of my (2) 10/22 rifles. For me, if "new untested/unknown ammo" runs good thru my older 10/22, then it typically runs in everything I own.

The bad news, the new Aquila ammo stayed strapped down (in the four case-boxes I bought) in the bed of my El Camino while I was shooting. Being I need to test more Federal, and try out the Aquila, I'll try to get back to the range in the next week, if I can. Things have been unusually busy for me lately so I'm not sure how things will go... I'll let you know once I've shot with it, and the older 10/22 will be with me for this trip!

I had three cases of Aguila SE-HV, and maybe another half-case. I've shot a bit over a case of it so far. It's been really great in my seven "good" rifles. This is the Eley-primed, older stuff. I still have two cases of the newer Aguila-primed stuff. It's not quite as good as the Eley-primed ammo, but for plinking, hunting, and general tin can-punching, I don't think it can be beaten at it's price point.
I haven't shot enough of the Aguila-primed ammo to make a serious judgement on it, but that older Eley-primed stuff is top-notch.

In my nine .22's, the Aguila HV Solids shoots just a hair worse than CCI SV. It isn't match ammo but is good enough for casual plinking or off-hand shooting.

The Aguila does shoot lights-out in my 10/22 custom. I bought a case just to use in this gun.

The Aguila SV did not shoot as well as the HV Solids in any of my guns. It didn't make any sense to me. SV is supposed to be more accurate.

As for the bulk Federal high velocity... I think this is supposed to be decent stuff.

I have a case of the Aguila Super Extra Standard Velocity. Got it for $200 shipped from Bud's. Very reliable. Good for plinking and burning up on dueling trees. Good accuracy at 25 yards, but easily eclipsed by midgrade ammo at 50. I'm assuming the high velocity (Red) version of the Aguila Super Extra will have similar performance and reliability.

1st it doesn't say Eley Primed anymore, it now says Aguila primed & has for quite awhile. I get better results with Standard Velocity than High Velocity BYMMV. I bought 10 cases when it netted out to $15/brick. I am a member of Target Sports Prime but now they have to charge sales tax so I may not renew even though I like Target Sports.

Late last week, after 2.5 days of rain (including the 1st half of the day I went shooting), I rushed out with a Ruger Mk-IV Target pistol and my "lightly used" newer 10/22 rifle for a short test session. The pistol feed and fired the Aquila SE-HV ammo perfectly, along with the Federal "Champion" hollow points.

Although it did need cleaning, the 10/22 was horrible with both ammo types. I'm certain it wasn't the fault of the ammo as I was seeing light strikes at the outer edge of the cases. I've got it apart for a good cleaning and a rising FP fix.

I've been taking a close look at the images used for rimfire advertising.
The pictures chosen to improve sales. Try it for ye'rself.
It'll give you an idea of what to expect.

Image

Look at the noses on those bullets.
I wouldn't expect any kind of consistent trajectories from those cartridges.
Looks like inebriated Keebler elves used tiny ball peen hammers to work 'em over.
For plinking or short range hunting they'd be adequate.
At 50 yards, and beyond, expect strays caused by the visible defects.

This method of determining what to expect from a 22lr cartridge works quite well.
Advertising images are chosen to be the best representation of a product.
When that's the best that they can offer, you know, just by looking, it won't be great.

Jala sir, you are correct about the projectiles being pretty beat up (the ones I just looked at have one good sized dent on each projectile, not dozens of tiny one as the picture). Although I did buy the 4 cases (20,000 rounds) of this ammo for plinking, I'm still disappointed, as I thought they made better quality ammo over all (with this being my 1st purchase of this brand). I wasn't expecting "top-tier typical SV like accuracy", but did have hopes of getting something better than the bulk Federal hollow points I normally plink with (I've been trying to get into some 50-yd BA "accuracy shooting" & thought this would be a step up). Looking at my ammo, I'd say the projectiles are "2nds", rejected by cameras on the line. I guess there's still a silver lining to this ammo, it was the cheapest ammo I could find at the time, and they do shoot well in the pistols I've had a chance to fire them in. Since I'm addicted to chasing aluminum cans, up, down, & around the backstop, these should still keep me entertained into the future.

Sorry, no modeling clay or other suitable medium, to keep them in place for close ups. I can say, while attempting to get some lined up, with the larger dents showing, I did finally notice lots of tiny marks. Hey, my 60 year old eyes aren't what they use to be...
Obviously, these suck for anything remotely close to serious accuracy shooting. For plinking and fun, they're fine.
