Yep... it's varminting ammo.
Turns rodents into meat spray.
Center of critter out to 200 yards.
Results dependent on y'er luck with the assembly line lottery.
Some batches are pretty decent....some ain't.
I think I've come up with a useful scenario...maybe. 50 shots at 200 yards, rimfire, whatever setup makes you happy. 22lr, 17 hmr, 22wmr, 17hm2, 17wsm, all brands, all types. Full benchrest setup, bipod, bags, or one-piece test rest, it doesn't matter. Grab a chunk of cardboard...
Jaia, is there one CCI .17HMR round that you`ve found to be reasonably consistent from lot to lot? As a relatively new rifle shooter, one of many interesting "quirks" I`ve experienced is the variability from individual rifle to rifle concerning preferred loads. My particular 93R17 FV appears to shoot the CCI 17grain TNT round the best. My challenge now is to find the second best in case I can`t find TNTs in the future.
Sorry, should have been a little more specific. I have shot 1000’s of rounds of the Hornady and CCI V- max 17 grain and also CCI TNT and have experienced some of the same results you have described. I just haven’t had any experience with the 17 VNT and didn’t know how they compared or even what the “VNT” stands for.
Thanks for your opinion.

There are only 2 companies manufacturing 17 hmr cartridges....CCI and Winchester.
Neither are in the business of making anything but hunting and plinking ammo.
Neither do any batch testing for accuracy, only function and chamber pressure to ensure safe use.
Expecting CCI or Winchester to produce consistent trajectories box after box is an exercise in optimism.
The cartridges y'er rifle "likes" this week, likely will sling strays and fliers with y'er next purchase.
It's ammunition made with 60's era machinery, run as fast as possible to make as many as possible.
Quality control isn't a priority. It's all intended for center of critter hunting, not precision paper punching.
VNT is the trademark name of the thin copper jacket Speer made bullet.
Speer uses the trademark for their 17 and 22 caliber meat spray projectiles.
That it is. As is, I can get intermittent sub-MOA groups at 100 yards with my Savage 93R17. It`d really be fun to see just how good the gun would shoot with some consistent quality ammunition.
Yeah i have had mixed results from .17hmr from my cz 457.
Best was from cci vmax an OLD box I found at the store. A17 and the tnt bullets have been the worst for me but as someone stated above I think its luck of the draw.
Everyone has a different view and use for the 17 hmr. l use mine almost exclusively as a hunting round, l do shoot paper occasionally, but mostly for sighting in a different scope or checking for zero. I have found the 17 hmr. ammo to be accurate enough for my needs for small vermin and the only issues l have had is some of the earlier ammo with split case and sincerely hope that is a thing of the past. l had never heard of the CCI 17 VNT, but may have to give it a try.
Shot it and it's good, but not any better that other CCI offerings. I think the VNT is CCI attempt to offer a clever take off from TNT that targets varmints; the implication being that it will explode varmints
Thanks for the first hand experience! From what I’ve read and experiences like yours I’m going to give it a try when l get some of my stash used up. Hopefully that will happen on our next shoot next week (Wyoming ground squirrels)
With most rimfire's the extra velocity comes from the primer compound. More compound or less compound but same amount of powder. Well anyways that is how SK does it.
