Those are very nice rifles. One of my club's juniors has just acquired an M65 Standard. The older Free Rifles, like your M55, are heavy, with a capital heavy.

Hope it comes with the rearsight and retaining screw, those don't grow on trees across the pond.

It did not come with a rear sight or retaining screw, but I have several extra sights. A board member with some contacts in Finland is helping out with a screw.

 

I also have a Valmet M65 and a Finnish 28/76.

I have a couple of spare sights, will have to do some research to determine which will fit the M55.

I have a Valmet Finnish Lion and it is extremely accurate. Also, such a solid action !!

You could be right about the receiver slot.

I got the sights years ago for almost nothing. A guy in Sweden (of all places) was selling them and erroneously believed they fit a Remington target rifle (??). Ebay bidding was very slow

Then there's the other question; what auction house takes 2 weeks or more to ship a rifle?

 

My 2 experiences with Rock Island Auction were none too speedy. I guess that's what happens when they sell 10,000 guns in a 3 or 4 day period.

My new Valmet M55 arrived at my FFL and I got a chance to try one of my spare rear sights with the set screw from my M65...fit like a glove...and not OJ's glove

Now that you have a lovely, sighted rifle, I highly recommend that you begin participating in the Benchrest 50 yd. Iron Sight Matches (with NRA A-23/5 target) on this forum. It's just little added incentive to get to work on your shooting. Slow & steady!

Finally gave up on finding a replacement screw to hold the sight on and had Scott Stonehill make replacements. They look great and work perfectly. Had him make a few extras for my Finnish 28/76 rifle also.
