Too old for Steel Challenge? Guess again! Floridas experience

I'm not in Florida, I'm 70+ and I take part in Steel Challenge (RFPO & RFRO). Too old? Not yet, not hardly!

I guess the weather in Floridia might have a little bit to do with it as well. Shooting season here tries to start in March and is pretty well done in Oct. I'm 64 and still shoot RFRI, RFRO, RFPO and PCCO every chance I get. Haven't tried NRL yet, takes me a long time to get back up once I get down.

Don't know about centerfire NRL, but in .22 NRL (PRS?) I think they allow for alternative positions don't they? Never having done it I wouldn't bet on it. But I intend to try if I can get the .22 PRS matches started again even if they're just outlaw matches.

I know that in USPSA Action Pistol they try to put any shooting positions requiring getting down as the last position to be fired so that getting up is off the clock. Can NRL do the same?

But back to Steel Challenge, where I am we just don't have the population to support what Floridians can do. I'm not going to write "I wish we did.", 'cause I like the fact that not many folks want to live here (Maine). If it was crowded I'd find a place to move to that wasn't... maybe Alaska.

Lots of “Distinguished Seniors” at our weekly Steel Challenge matches.

And many of them are at the top of the sheet when the results come out.

We also have many guys who just want to beat their buddy, no matter where they finish overall.

Makes for a lot of fun and competition.

We try to keep it fun for everybody and judging by the amount of new shooters who come back for more, it must be working!

Besides, it’s cheaper than Bingo and If there’s a choice, shooting with my buddies beats Bingo every time.

I have never seen a shooting event where accommodations were not made for older or handicapped shooters. My local NRL match will do everything they can so you can shoot. Once when my back was tweaked I shot “old guy rules” even though I am not old
now if you shot “adaptive” or “old guy” rules and placed first every time, there might be something to say about it.

I'm interested in Rimfire Steel Challenge specifically because it's something that can be done by "older folks". You just stand there and shoot.

I've stayed away from NRL22 specifically because of all the up/down stuff. I shot one NRL22 match and my knees were killing me for a week. I'll likely look at rimfire silhouette because I can shoot my bull barrel 10/22 there without all the up/down stuff.

There's only one stage that requires movement and it's really minor movement. It's a few steps from one shooting box to the next. If you decide you don't want to partake, so what? Don't partake. If you want to move slowly, then move slowly. We shoot against ourselves anyway, or at least I do. I know my norm' and I just want to do better than the last time.

FWIW, your reason is precisely why I love steel challenge!

Age 76 here and usually finish in the top 10 in our weekly match which includes several GMs.

Although I have several Ruger 10-22 rifles I still enjoy running my OLD AR-15 with a CMMG 22 conversion kit. Nothing super trick about that setup for sure and some of the newer shooters who see it initially think it's a "new" S&W M&P 15-22, but it is not. This old Vietnam era rifle has lots of bashing and usage showing on the stock and hand grip, but I still love the feel of "my" old AR.

My wife loves her S&W M&P 15-22 with the Holosun optic. Does quite well with it and it's strictly stock.

No need to go nuts buying all kinds of trick equipment for Steel Challenge. Use what you have on hand and upgrade or change as you see fit once you get comfortable with the game.
