Tikka T1X .22 magazine disassembly?

My T1X has a preference for one of the greasier of the German target ammos. Is there a prescribed method to take apart the magazine? I really like this rifle, but the lube on the bullets from S+K really kind of leave a mess all thru the magazine and I would like to be able to clean it. Thanks and have a great day......................

Best I can come up with is this post in another thread. See the first paragraph

https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showpost.php?p=11371337&postcount=15

I was going to take one of mine apart and do a write up. After reading that ↑ post I think I'll wait until I really need to. Instead I pushed the follower all the way to the bottom with a 3/16" punch and I swabbed the sides with a Q-tip

The base plate snaps off and back on quite easily. the only thing I would add is that only removal portion of the first paragraph is applicable - Do not cut off the tab.

The only reason for saying this is that I sent the instructions to an acquaintance and he cut off the tab, then he was ticked off because the factory base plate did not fit properly after cutting the tab. On the other hand he is the type of person who can screw up boiling water.

At about what round count are you guys cleaning your T1X mags at? or is it due to the more greasy ammo like Tac-22?

About 2-3 years ago went to SST/Pins to clean my brass and had a big 25+ year old Lyman 2500 vibrating dry media case cleaner sitting around literally gathering dust.

I had a big box of bungie cords and quite a bit of 3/4" plywood and short 2x12 cut offs laying around so I decided to throw together a ultrasonic cleaner. About 90 minuets later had a pretty good non-heated ultrasonic cleaner that cost me less than $20 to put together.

Have used the C**P out of it with great success for cleaning/de-greasing everything from brand new scope rings, entire rifle bolts, my mags for my P320, S&W Shield, XD45, all kinds of other gun parts, my AR's BCG's, to my full sized HG's and lots of non gun related items.

Use small stainless steel shower organizers I modify to hold parts oriented to allow internal dirt and debris a way to vibrate out.

I use a 50/50 mix of mineral spirits and PB Blaster or my home brew of Big Ed's Red or just strait mineral spirits depending on the application.

Pretty sure would work very well if I invert and submerge my T1X mags and let the ultrasonic motion to its work.

Cleaning the magazine without removing the baseplate onliy succeeds in making a simple job difficult. It takes about 5 seconds to pop the baseplate off giving full access to the inside of the magazine.
Unless someone is mechanically challenged I don't understand why it is done any other way, but to each their own.

Yes, I have done it or I would not have recommended it or stated that it can be done quickly. All it takes is a small flat blade screw driver slide it in and the mag base pops loose at the front then slightly rotate the front edge down and the back aftwards.

I be willing to bet though that there have been someone who has broken a magazine though. If you look at my first post about this I mentioned having a friend who got his off ok but then he cut off the tab rendering the magazine useless. I watched this same friend mount a scope on a $3000 rifle and by the time he got through with it between the screwdriver oops, dings, and scratches in the stock I would not have given a $1000 for the rifle. If you are not comfortable doing it, then you shouldn't.

To paraphrase a line from a Dirty Harry movie - "A man's gotta know his limitations."

My issue is trying to cram this into a place where it definitely won't fit. I've tried to push down on the wall of magazine to see if it'll give enough to slide the screwdriver in a 1/8". No bueno! I could sharpen the end of the screwdriver but then the screwdriver (that I've had for almost 50 years) would be no good as a screwdriver. I do have some others but they're almost too small for something like this

As far as your friend (Bubba?) I assure you I've successfully mounted many scopes, including many for customers, and I'm quite capable of doing so without damage. I've even done quite a bit of machine shop type work (lathes, mills, surface grinders, etc). So I'm reasonably mechanical. Having to remove the base plate by trying to wedge a screwdriver tip into a slot that's much smaller than the blade doesn't seem reasonable :)

For whatever reason it appears that you think I am directly challenging your mechanical ability. If that is the case then you are mistaken - it was a general comment because there are a lot of folks who are mechanically challenged.

I am not sure if you are pulling my leg with your picture or not, however I suggest that you take a look at the size of the screwdriver being used in the illustration and compare it to the size you have in your picture.

If you aren't puliing my leg with your picture then I suggest using one of the alternative suggestions mentioned in previous posts.

The screwdriver in my pic is about the same size as the one in the pic in DIP's instructions. Mine even has a pocket clip but it has a longer shank. I even tried one of those little precision screw drivers. No good

There has to be a better way to take these things apart. I'll see what else I can find. Until then....I'm out

Thanks for all the great help; you guys are too much!!!!! I did take mine apart. I have an old jewelers screw driver with a 2.5mm wde blade and slid it in there without a hitch. Once apart I also ground about .1 from the bottom of the follower to be able to get that last rnd in the mag a little easier. Still having ejection issues at times, but I think this is a good accurate rifle and worth the time it takes to tune it......................

i just got a chance to read this thread, sorry for the late response. I bought a set of mini chisels at my local princess auto, it's the kanadian version of harbor freight. the chisels are manufactured in India and come in a set of 4. 2 of them are perfect for removing the baseplate. each chisel is about 5 inches long and about 1/8" diameter. I believe they are heat treated stainless steel.

The one might be a little smaller but not by much. After seeing some recent activity in this thread I went out to garage last night where I still have a couple of my magazines sitting on my work bench. I have couple different sizes of those "precision" screwdrivers with changeable tips. I took out the larger size one that has a much smaller (thinner) driver tip than either one pictured previously. It still wouldn't fit. I tried forcing it and the plastic started deforming. That seam is so small that I can see why someone tried a small chisel. All four of my mags are the same way but maybe others have a little more room? I've decided I don't need to take my mags apart bad enough that I'll risk beating up the edges to take them apart. It's just not worth it to me. I can clean them well enough by pushing the follower down and cleaning the inside out with a cotton swab

I know, I don't post so much. But I lurk a lot!

Hey, if a guy was to damage the magazine wall to where it will not retain the bottom, no big deal. Just get and install the DIP conversion kit. OK, so he ends up with a 6 round magazine that does not stick out of the bottom of his rifle like an upside down shark fin. Big deal! His disassembly/reassembly issue will be very much simplified.

Personally, I have converted 3 Tikka magazines for my T1X without a hitch. They function perfectly and actually look like they belong with the rifle.

So, you didn't have to shorten the spring? Those definitely look better!
