Three screw SA Colt .22?

Hi, I've been looking at the Ruger three screw .22's and liking the old flat gate models.

But before I buy, I was wondering if Colt ever made a 3 screw, 4 well defined clicks .22 single action, all I've been able to find look like 2 screw models, frontier, etc.

Anyone hear of a Colt SA .22 (other then the converted single shot, an 1851 I think)?

Yes. Colt Frontier Scout (aluminum frame.) Later- New Frontier (steel, case hardened frame.) These are 7/8 scale versions of the SAA. These are very fine little guns. The steel case hardened frame models are stronger and quite beautiful.
I have a Colt New Frontier and two Ruger "3screws". Both Rugers have the later rounded gates. The flat gates and New Frontiers are getting rare and sellers are getting rather proud of them.

Welcome

check out Wilkersons book on the Colt SA 22s.

it covers everything you would want to know about them.

the older RUger 3 screws (not all are flat gates) are also the 4 click, unless its been updated/upgraded. If the gun/owner still has the old parts, you can convert back to OEM.

just an FYI, you know you should not carry a live one under the hammer?

good luck

The Colt's single actions have been '4-clicks', the '3-screw' is a designation thing has only applied to Rugers because they changed their design to 4.
Had 2 Colt's Frontier Scouts, they were 'tin can accurate', then a New Frontier 22 (much nicer and better than my Scouts) with the steel frame and adj. sights, kinda like a 7/8 size 'flattop target'. Btw, that '7/8ths size' is nice for a 22, the weight and proportions work. A 22 on the full size is a beast.
If you dont care for the adj. sights of the New Frontier 22 look for the Peacemaker 22 (I suggest you forgo the Scout models), it too is the steel frame, Real color case, and the 'roundtop/fixed sight'; 1970-77? Mind you they are pricey but they are real Colt's.
The early, 1970-71 had 4 3/4" barrels, then 4.4" and 6". Guess which is most desirable by collectors?

"3 screw" is reference to old model Ruger SA revolvers. Rugers and Colts are different guns. Rugers use coil springs. Colts use flat springs. Rugers are a more robust/reliable platform. Flat gate Rugers and Colt New Frontiers are getting more rare and more into collector pricing. If you are wanting to experience that jewel like snickity-snick Colt-like action, get the Colt. If you want ball peen hammer reliability, get the Ruger. If you want a collector get, them both. If you want a shooter, get them both. Although, as a shooter, at the expense of starting a feud, I lean toward the Ruger.
As stated above (safety always bears repeating) these are five shooters not six. Load one, skip one, load four more. Pull hammer back and lower on empty chamber, even at the bench. Habit is key to safety.
Although we've seen it in movies, NEVER, EVER fan a revolver. It will damage it.

It is the 4 clicks of the original colts that I like, I dislike the sound of my Ruger .32 H&R mag (wonderfully accurate tho). I am looking for a shooter not a collector.

So, am I correct in understanding that the Colt 22 SA's are all 4 clicks regardless of the number of frame screws. Perhaps I'm not understanding the responses.

Are the Colt steel frame frontiers 4 clicks inspite of the 2 frame screws?

Perhaps I'm making this more complicated than it is, unfortunately I haven't been able to find any to handle locally. Great to know the Colts are slightly scaled down.

And I have a USFA China Camp and am very familiar on how to load and carry it with the hammer down on an empty cylinder, but thanks for the reminder!

If you buy a Colt 22 SAA dont worry about the number of screws. they will all be the same more or less.

however, note that Colt did come out with a 80s series NEW FRONTIER with a loading gate SAFETY. So i would avoid them if you dont want something like that.

good luck

The Colt's, the original design by the original manufacture, all have 4 clicks.
Forget about the screws.
Iirc some of the Colt's clones from Italy may have 4 clicks.
If you must have a Colt's branded revolver I hope you started saving up before this.
