Hey guys Im in the market for a new Semi Auto .22lr. I currently have a Savage BSEV in .22lr and absolutely love it. I couldn't have anymore fun for the amount of $$ I have invested into it. I just want something semi auto. Something accurate, but awesome to plink with.

Im basically looking for a Nice Semi auto .22lr. I was looking into the Walther MP5 Series or maybe their HK416. Then I came across the Anschutz MSR RX22 "Scar" style rifle. Money isn't a huge concern. IMO spending $500+ on the Walther and $800 on the Anshutz isn't a big deal, as long as the Anschutz is worth the price difference. I know they are known for the best Bolt guns, but how are their Semi's?

Here is a pic I took from the internet. This is basically the rifle Im looking into, but before I dropped this much coin on a new .22lr I figured Id ask the rimfire community 1st!

I really like mine. Have not put many rounds through it. I had the barrel threaded and shoot it suppressed, does not really like standard velocity ammo for ejecting and feeding. Runs like a champ with high velocity like the cci tactical stuff. Definitely worth the price difference for the barrel and trigger. I shot some excellent groups with mine.

I have several of the tactical style 22s and they all prefer the high velocity ammo if you look in the owners manual it states the need to use high velocity or may result in feeding issues. Its just the nature of them I am thinking of getting one to add to my collection as well. I looked on the website and it seemed like it was pretty accurate compared to ISSM version.

These are on sale at many places right now for $450 or less (e.g. Landbos, Grabagun, etc). I just ordered one in FDE. Classic City even has both Precision models for the same low price as their sporters ...

http://www.classiccityfirearms.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=17235

Classic City also has the hard to find mags discounted ...

http://www.classiccityfirearms.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=14831

Please note there is a weird disclaimer on the Classic City page that they will process orders after April 29, so might want to call them on April 30 if you place an order with them to confirm inventory.

Any idea if Anschutz is selling these off to get out of the US market, or this is just a bold move to be more competitive with S&W in this market segment? Have seen some great reviews of the (newer) MSR RX22.

(-fidelity. dropping in from MDShooters)

Those are ISSC magazines, not AnschĂĽtz magazines. The only difference is the bottom plate. Those look like a great deal, they should work just the same. ISSC dumped a bunch of mags to CDNN. This is where they are most likely coming from.

The original magazines can be ordered through Steyr for now, while their inventory lasts.

Due to importation changes, there are some good deals on various Anschutz products. If you want an RX 22, now is the time to get one.

I'm interested to hear from anyone who has been living with this rifle as to how it is holding up further down the line. I know ISSC had huge problems with breaking parts, feeding issues etc. and it would be good to know if the Anschutz is doing better despite coming off the same production line?

Also having read the excellent review on rrdvegas.com I had a question, as the user manual states that after removing the lower, no further disassembly is required for cleaning - not something borne out in the review... so the question is - should it be taken apart further for cleaning or just do what the manual says? as it also says that 'any further disassembly should only be completed by qualified personnel' so as an average joe, taking it apart further will no doubt invalidate the warranty...

I am torn between buying one of these or a Sig 522 Target which is so easy to take apart and clean it's untrue, and from reports seems about the most reliable semi auto there is apart from perhaps the 10/22...

thanks!

Only problem is the s&w is equivalent of over $1200 in the UK and I have seen mixed reports or accuracy due to flexing in the plastic (polymer) parts. Everyone seems to rave about them as ar15 trainers but that's not what I want as in the UK we will never legally own a centerfire semi auto.

I want a cool looking, fun, accurate and reliable lightweight sporting rifle for target and hunting, hence having narrowed it down to the msr and the SIG - my impressions are that the msr is cheaper and may be a tad more accurate and have a better trigger, but the SIG seems easier to live with and has better as well as cheaper mags...

The biggest hurdle for the MSR RX22 to overcome is the reputation garnered by the ISSC before it. I spoke to so many people "In the know" who warned that the MSR was just a rebadged ISSC, coming off the exact same assembly line etc etc. Then I spoke with a respected importer (of ALL major brands including ISSC) who stated emphatically these DO NOT just come off the ISSC line and in fact they went through quite a detailed hands on overhaul by Anschutz. He said his order of them was delayed by 18 months as Anschutz advised they wanted all the bugs worked out. Since he started selling them he has not had a single return and he's heard nothing but good reports about them. Based on this and steve b's great review, I sprang for one last week. I bought the Blackhawk folder and put a Bushnell 1-4 X24 on it. I quickly sighted in at a lasered 50 yards and was easily putting 10 shots INSIDE a 1" patch (no shots cutting the border of the patch) using CCI Mini Mags (40gr cprn). In fact, I could easily hit that patch all day long, 22 shot mag after 22 shot mag (benched off of sandbags). I also tried a few mags of 40gr lead rn Lapua with close to the same results. I shot almost a sleeve of ammo (500 rnds) in 2 sessions without a single hiccup! The gun was supplied with a 10 shot mag (badged "Anschutz" on the base) and I bought 5, 22 shot mags (badged "ISSC" on the base) and all functioned flawlessly.
I didn't even bother with the supplied open sights as my eyes are going downhill fast. I used high rings but found I still need a bit more height for optimal comfort so I have a set of Burris extra highs on the way. Given the inherent accuracy of this rifle, I'm going to upgrade the scope and add a Harris Benchrest bipod and go at her again trying some different ammo. I'm sure it'll shoot true sub MOA at 50 yards consistently, my next outing (I've already shot a couple 1/2" 10 shot groups but not on a regular basis)
I haven't touched the factory trigger setting but might have a look at it for next time. I didn't measure it but it feels close to the advertised 4lb factory setting. It is a bit mushy and long for my liking but I keep reminding myself this is a semi auto "black rifle".
I'm very happy with my decision to buy this rifle. I have friends that can match my MSR's performance with their 10/22's, but they have had to do a lot of work to get there and spent just as much, if not more, doing it.
I'll keep you updated...

Thanks for the detailed range report. I just picked up my MSR RX22 in the Desert (FDE) configuration. After checking out the user manual CD, I was thinking, "man, the Blackhawk is really a nice looking gun as well." Hard to select, but the Anschutz barrel, trigger group, Steve B's review, and the new price point made it hard to pass any cosmetic configuration. Like you, mine came with a 10-rd Anschutz mag, and I ordered some more 10-rd ISSC mags (given that I live in MD) ...

http://grabagun.com/legacy-issc212004-22-mk22-spare.html

Note to those shopping for 10-rd mags, the Anschutz ones are smaller in size and possibly easier to change if shooting prone. The ISSC mags (about $10-20 less than the Anschutz mags, which at 10 rd capacity, are really hard to find) are the size of 22-rd mags with a large black insert blocking loading of more than 10 rds (see the pic in the above link). Anschutz does the same sort of trick but is starting with something like a 15-rd mag with an insert for their 10-rd mags (not in front of me so may be a few rounds larger, but overall it is smaller).

No chance to take it to the range yet. I have a Ruger 10/22 Target Tactical (16-inch heavy barrel) on order, and after I have optics on both, probably will compare both in stock configurations at the range.

For those on the fence about getting one of these. RSR (FFL distributor) is currently clearancing out these rifles, hence the obscenely low prices. I'm speculating that Steyr is going to sell these straight to FFL and eliminate the middleman. I'm also guessing that the premium price will come back.

I got my Chrome Precision model for $465 + $50 (2 magazines) out the door.

@hambone49 - I read this on another forum which may help - he reported back that they did fix it totally:

Hello all. Well, this post was going to include an in-depth report on what I did last night down at the range, including pictures I was going to tell you what I did with my freshly cleaned out RX22 and seek more advice from this very knowledgeable board. However, for reasons you will read below, it won't. Suffice it to say that having gained the appropriate permissions from my better half I shot off (see what I did there?) down the range taking the RX22 and six different brands of ammo with me. Of the 100 rounds chambered I had 32 FTF's, fail to cycle or other misc reasons for no noise from the muzzle. One of the brands - SK Standard Plus - gave me a full magazine of FTF's !!

Based on this, I came to the conclusion that there is something wrong with my rifle. In a frustrated state, I decided to e-mail the UK Anschutz importer/distributor and explain the problem and ask them if there was anything they could do for me. I didn't really expect to get a response from them as they clearly state on their website that they only deal with the trade and no correspondence will be entered into with non RFD individuals.

Much to my surprise, I got a call from them this afternoon. They stated that the problem I had described to them in my mail was something that they knew about and had experienced before. They told me that there is a factory upgrade availale from Anschutz to cure this problem and it involves replacing springs in the action with upgraded items. As they are located only a few miles from where I live, I have arranged to drop the rifle off with them later this week.

So, that's the story so far and I will keep you updated. I am a little dissapointed that a known problem was not communicated by Anschutz until i made contact. I could have merrily carried on wasting ammo and getting frustrated with what is otherwise a great rifle.
