T1x vs BMR

All the great reviews on the T1x convinced me that's what I needed. But those same reviews have driven the price up $100. When you add a trigger spring and a Picatinny rail the Tikka is nearly $150 more than the Bergara. Is it worth it? I am only asking the guys with both guns or experience with both. I'll be using it for informal target shooting and using CCI SV, not the "dollar a round" ammo.

Don't want to start a firestorm with my first post, however $600+ for a 22 rifle makes this old guy cringe.

YES, YES, and Yes...............I have owned both. The BMR is a great light woods walker, easy to carry and not too long. The T1X is a whole other level imho. I kept my BMR for about 6 months, did the trigger job put decent glass on top ,but, to me it didn't shoot up to my expectations. After I got my T1X 20" barrel, I realized the BMR needs to find another home. It has, and the Tikka that shot great out of the box just seems to get better and better. If you just want to kill cans at 25 yards the Bergara will fill the bill. If you want to print tight groups at 50 - 75 - 100 yards better go with the Tikka.

There, I said my piece............ok guys, go ahead and flame me .

I have had trigger time with both, the T1X is a better rifle by a good margin. I shoot a 4" gong @ 200 yds almost daily with a T1X/Leupold 4-12/warne dovetail rings. No rail and No extra spring.(heated factory spring) I just looked at pricing and the best price at a glance was BMR $489 T1X $514 If cost is a major factor, the best accuracy per dollar you are gonna get (new) is Savage Mark II FV or Savage B22 FV.

OP - Here's my journey:

  • bought T1X 20" in 2020 : still have it in the safe
  • bought Bergara BMR (steel) in May 2022: (gone in Sept 2022)
  • bought T1X 16" in Dec 2022: it is a keeper

I did not have luck with MY BMR, like you, I shoot CCI SV, and some other mid grade stuff like SK Std, Norma Tac22, Wolf match, etc.. and some cheaper Aguila SV, Geco Rifle, Federal automatch, etc.. MY Bergara did not like any of the food I fed to it. It was returned back to the mother-ship and I got my money back. Some members are much luckier than me, they are happy with their BMRs, but I gathered that their BMR shoots good with higher grade ammo - which I cannot afford.

Both of my T1x do not require trigger spring mod. they are both set to 8 oz pull just by adjusting the set screw. zero slack, zero over-travel. No need for any trigger upgrade or trigger job. (truth be told, MY Bergara had a very good trigger too). All I added to T1X are a DIP 25 MOA rail, and a Tikka vertical handgrip, total cost is about $50-$60. (And a $40 cheek riser -- but it is a standard setup to all my rifles, T1x or Bergara regardless...)

Above is just 1 person's experience. Happy shopping.

(Something else you may like to consider: Tikka guarantees 1 MOA. Bergara guarantees 1" at 50 yds (aka 2 MOA). Both are based on high grade ammo, of course)

Sure is nice to hear all these positive comments on the Tikka T1x as I have one on order. Now if it would just get here!
BTW I paid $620 for mine tax, title and license out the door. I would like to know where to buy one for $487 for $100 I just might cancel mine and order elsewhere! Could by some ammo with the extra cash I'd have.

I have both rifles in 17hmr. They shoot equally. I like the feel of the tikka for a walking varmint rifle. It cost more than the Bergara to set. The stock modules cost money. Beretta is proud of those pieces of plastic. Needed to get cheek riser and stock spacers and tx3 buttpad, to get correct lop. I have long arms. Had to get 30moa rail from DIP. Had to buy extra mag. Optics. It adds up. Quickly.
Bergara had correct lop out of the box. Came with 30moa rail. I added bolt handle, cheek riser, optic. Very nice off rest for groundhogs. Meopta sport 3-15x50 rd on Tikka. Meopta optika 5x4-20x50RD on bergara. No modifications on either trigger both rifles running about 20 oz. Gerald said it better than I did without being as wordy. If I were in it for the budget bergara all the way. I have 1350.00 in Tikka with 400$ optic. I have 850.00 or so in Bergara with roughly 500$ optic. YMMV. All in what you into.

Forgot another big plus in my mind, for the money, are the mags. Bergara comes with two. They had some plastic shavings in them upon arrival and the rail was finger tight. Folks complain about this sort of stuff but I generally take mags apart upon taking delivery of a rifle anyway. Rail was coming off anyway to clean off oil and tighten down with a little loctite to spec anyway. Nice rifles. I'll be keepin

g both. Target was first shots thru Bergara.

WYYBill,
Be sure to check and see if you can get a better price by asking for a email quote as suggested above by
bpost1958 and student69 and wagon it worked for me! If they don't offer an email quote you could call and ask for price matching or a lower price. All they can do is say no! Also might be good to try local shops in your area or close by that you wouldn't mind making a road trip to. That would save the shipping charges (you'd probably spend that on gas) and you would get to put hands on the rifle before you buy. Be sure to read VZ.28's posts above I think he's spot on! I hope the price quotes help give you an idea on pricing. Good luck on whichever rifle you choose!

Understand. Just my 2 cents. My experience and mine alone. I'm sure there are other rifles that shoot really really well that aren't even these brands. With rimfire there are a few things that will determine accuracy. One of the most overlooked is ammo. Just depends on the lot. Veritable crap shoot. One box of x ammo shoots great next box not so much. I try different varieties and if it shoots well I toss the dice and buy a brick and hope for a good choice in one of my rifles. With four 17hmr rifles I get lucky usually but not always. It's usually not the rifle. Either the person behind the rifle or the ammo. YMMV. I get your point about initial cost. Believe me I get it, and to risk a flailing by one fanboi or another, my contention is bergara is a better buy, as it is not only cheaper initially but you have to add less stuff post purchase to get shooting. I have both rifles + anschutz 1717D and Steyr zephyr 2. I figure I can speak to the issue, not by any means a professional, but do have some experience. None of this necessarily makes your choice easier, anecdotal information. Remember to have fun with it, it's a fun thing to put together a rifle, whatever you choose.

Apparently price has gone up from 2-3 weeks ago when i ordered mine. I just tested a quote from GunZone, it is now $521. Oh well, i guess i got lucky. On other hand, price may come down after a few weeks…

Good luck with your shopping.

By far yes. I currently have both with same scopes the bmr doesnt care for CCI SV, only thing is seems to really like is SK rifle match consistant but very few groups under 1/4” however tikka on the other hand with under 500 rounds through it has shot multiple multiple sub 1/4” groups at 50yds with CCI SV. Tikka is a shooter!

Mark70 - you are much welcome, just trying to help fellow members save a few bucks, and to share my personal experience on toys (tools) that i have /had. I would think the $80 bucks savings can go to some piccatiny rail or scope rings? Enjoy your T1x, am quite sure that you will. [emoji122]

I have a T1X in 22lr. for factory class matches and hunting. It loves CCI SV, and. will shoot any ammo you put in it. I also have 2 Bergara B14R, and have been looking at the BMR. Due to the T1x, I don't think I need a BMR for now. If I got a BMR, I would want to change the trigger to a Trigger Tech Diamond, like my B14R's That jacks the price up. My T1X has a 1 lb trigger with a trigger spring change.
I would go with the T1X
