Stingers or MiniMags for self defense?

In 2010 I bought a Beretta 21A. I wrote about how much I've liked it here. That hasn't changed.

It's broken in real well now and is reliable with Minimags (as it was from the start), and also Stingers now. I found some Stingers today and ran 100 through the "Bobcat" without a problem. I intentionally limp-wristed several rounds. It ran fine.

So my question is which would you prefer for self defense out of the 21A?

That's what I hope to hear opinions about. I know about the rimfire versus centerfield debate as well as the bigger is better talk. I also realize the Bobcat has no extractor.

I've found that I WILL consistently carry the 21A, where I won't bigger (and some smaller guns) guns. I've been through 3 Smith j frames, including 2 airweights, the Kel Tecs, NAA mini revolvers, Colt Mustang, and most recently a Ruger LCR.

For one reason or another, I found them impractical for me.

The 21A is with me all the time. Enough about that.

Just wanted to give a little background, hoping that you all will help me with my question.....Stingers or Minimags, assuming one is reliable as the other in the gun?

Thank you in advance and best regards, Skychief.

Edited to mention that the Minimags in question, are 40 grain solids.

22 hollow points are for blowing the heads off squirrels. I want the heaviest solid .22lr I can find, standard velocity or higher. I don't want it wasting all its energy with fast expansion. I want it going deep and ripping things up along the way.

I had a 21A 20 years ago and am still kicking myself for selling it. If I had to carry a 22 I would find one of those.

Another vote for CCI Velocitors

Standard length case, full 40 gr., good designed hollow point and very high velocities. Here is a good review, and other reviews are around.

Edit: Decided to add that if you like, alternate cartridges. When I carry my small pocket pistols I will often alternate a Gold Dot with a Silvertip. Or similarly I might alternate a hollow point with a solid.

Thoughts on self defense and the question posed here...

Some thoughts on self defense and the question posed here. The question was what choice of ammo. We really don't need to be told a 12 ga. slug will do the job better. You first have to carry, and if you choose a .22, so be it. Seems to me some pretty good agents have carried Beretta .22 pistols. And it is my opinion that any bullet penetrating the brain housing group will cause the attack to stop in a hurry. So let us not rain on each other's parade.

Look up "self defense ammunition for the 22lr handgun" on YouTube. He recommends CCI minmag 36 gr. HP and Winchester 40 gr. SuperX PowerPoint PLHP. He documents testing in the video to show you why. My wife carries a LCR in 22 lr and I want the best ammo for her and this guy makes sense.

Don't worry about tit because it won't make much difference if you do your part. The gun and load take a backseat to the end user and how well he shoots. The Bobcat is a fine gun and either ammo will do well with a group right where it counts.

People love quoting the FBI penetration figures. For the average joe it's bunk. A five inch boning knife will reach the heart or liver, so what do you need 18 inches of penetration for?

As long as the bullet goes deepening to get the oil pump, it won't matter what you used. Remember the Reagan shooing. Hinkley was using a cheap 39.95 RG .22 revolver and the bullet punched right through press secretary Jim Brady's skull. All the others hit went right down and survived only because they were literally 5 minutes from the best er and trauma center in D.C.

You've picked a good gun that you like. Enjoy and don't over think it.

Obviously there are better choices for "stopping" an attacker. But if I had to shoot someone with a .22, my intent would be totally about "killing" the attacker.

My choice would be CCI Segmented. Same velocity as Stingers, but 3 wound channels per hit. This means IF they survive long enough to reach surgery, it's a LOT more likely they will still die under the knife. Mission accomplished.

Stingers are 31 grain, Velocitors are 40. That does make some difference in effectiveness. You have to remember that both are hypervelocity, and that's going to be rougher on the Beretta's aluminum frame. I've had a couple of them, and they would not function really well with anything but Velocitors; Stingers didn't work dependably. I sold the guns, rather than beat them up.

If you must use it for carry, I'd carry Velocitors, and range shoot the round nose 40 grain Mini Mags.

I'm late to the thread, but back when I took my Beretta 21A out on occasion I tried many types of .22LR. Including the Stingers and Mini Mags.

My preference for reliability was the solid nose Mini Mags. The Stingers were great for ear piercing noise, but the Stingers would stick in the chamber a little too often for self defense duty in my 21A.

The Stinger's fired cases would also bulge out to the shape of the feed ramp while the Mini Mags would not.

I carried a M21A for years and like Chicha...(man wears a hat like that down the street he ain't afraid of nothing) had much greater reliability of action with 40 grain RN bullets in regular cases. My first choice was Super-X solids but that was before Winchester "improved" the brand. My second cboice was 40 grain solid Mini Mags and Stinkers I mean Stingers were reserved for a few rifles.

I saw a good many M21A pistols in classes that someone had recommended Stingers for that failed to cycle reliably as they also did poorly in mine.

Like several others I think with a .22LR in self defense that penetration is a more critical factor than fragmenting or expanding.

Of the two choices I would go with the Mini Mag 40 grain solid in a heart beat......but would not depend on it until I had a lot of trouble free shots in that particular pistol with that particular magazine.
