Stevens Model 65

Hello,

I just joined RFC and have several questions about my rimfire rifles. My father purchased a Stevens Model 65 bolt action 22, as I have determined by the barrel length of 22", no model markings, manufacturer J Stevens Arms Company, and the ivory bead front sight. When my father passed, my brother inherited the gun. The inside feed tube was lost some time when we were children and I purchased a replacement (I thought) for my brother. The replacement was too long and must have been from some other Stevens model. I just inherited the rifle from my brother when he passed. I would like to make the rifle functional with the tube feed again. I have looked for the inside tube from many gun part sites, but have not found one. I would like to shorten the one I have, but do not know the correct length of the brass tube. I removed the outer feed tube which measures 11 7/8" long. I do not know if the inner brass tube should be the same length. Any help with this question will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Robert Read

Robert, Stevens had three models that were called 65's, from your description I think you have the one from the late 1920's.

The follower of the inner mag tube should stop just about even with the front of the lifter. Open the action and slide the inner tube in until the follower touches the front of the lifter and then mark the location of the hole for the pin and it should work fine. These do not eject the last round.

I have book on the Stevens Visible Loaders which says that the new Model 66 was assembled with parts from two other models: the Model 65 and the Visible Loader Models 70 and 71. The author noted that some of the later models even had a "Visible Loader" line in their barrel rollstamps.

The outer magazine tube of the Model 70 is 11 7/8 inches long and threaded on the action end. So I think the reproduction inner and outer magazine tubes for the Stevens Model 70 manufactured by Jack First will work for you:
Jack First Inner Magazine Tube for Stevens Visible Loader.

The Model 66C & later versions, as well as the earlier 66B are a completely different action than the No 65, No 66 & 66A. The 66C uses the same magazine as the Savage Model's 5 & 6 which also have a number of Stevens, Springfield and house branded versions.

The very early No 65's had Visible Loader marked barrels but the barrels did not have the dovetails in the same place and were not machined to fit a Visible Loader. The magazines are shorter than those for a Visible Loader.

I'm not talking about the magazine tube, the magazine (clip) that holds the rounds for a bolt action rifle.
Then you do not have a 66C, they're tube fed as are the 65 and earlier 66's. The model numbers were stamped on the barrels and they could be swapped between a few models so you might have a 66C barrel on a different action. I thought possibly it was a different model that had the numbers poorly stamped but I can't think of anything it could be, the 86C was also tube fed so it can't be one of those with a poorly stamped 8.

I have a follow up question on this post. I know this is old, so maybe it won't go anywhere. I have a Stevens Model 65 ( I think). I've attached a picture, so let me know what you think. This was my grandpa's gun, and I would like to restore it to the point that it can be fires again. Looking for some help on the following:
  • Is this a Model 65?
  • Where can I find parts for this.
    • Need a magazine tube cap
    • Need the entire trigger mechanism
Here are a couple of items that may help with my question:
  • The magazine tube measures 11 7/8"
  • The magazine tube does not have a mount that is visible outside the stock
  • The barrel is 22"
Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.
