Steiner Predator 4 4-16x50mm E3 Reticle - anyone use one - thoughts

I found I can get the Steiner Predator 4 4-16x50mm E3 Reticle for around $500 and was wondering if anyone owns one or has used one. I want it for my Ruger Precision Rifle (22LR) to use for target shooting (no matches, just shooting in the afternoon for fun) and squirrel hunting. 99.5% of the time, I will be under 125 yards (hunting even less), and the most I would ever do target shooting would be 200.
I noticed the scope has an illuminated reticle and thought in the deep woods, that could be a big help when trying to pick out a gray squirrel on a dark tree with dark crosshairs. I presume if I don't turn it on, the crosshairs are just the normal black, am I correct in that assumption? Figure I dont need it shooting targets.

Thanks

All illuminated reticle scopes I've owned were a standard black until the switch was turned on. A Steiner scope of any model for $500 is a surprise to me. I'd be leary that it's a Chinese knock off, or a budget scope that Steiner contracts outside. Look into to it carefully, to prevent buyers remorse. A used Leupold would put you in the same budget price with a bomb proof warranty to back it up... something to consider. I have several Zeiss conquest scopes and like them very much, but the warranty is a hassle. While I've only had need to send one of them back, it wasn't nearly as simple as the leupold warranty which requires nothing but sending the scope in with a description of the issue. Good luck with whatever option you choose and happy shooting.

Thanks - I was looking at several Leupolds but it seems they are all out of stock. Steiner offers a very good discount through a Professional program (only allowed one scope a year) and it ships directly from them in Colorado. Leupold also has some good PRO programs but a lot is sold out currently and the discount is not quiet as good. I just cant figure out what scope I really want..... LOL

I know that several military units use their products and they were always known to be top quality. Just not a ton of info on the newer scopes online. I like the scope layout and the lighted crosshair right in the center as it seems like it would be convenient for hunting.

It is part of the PRO program. Certain fields can get discounts (LEO, Military, sometimes retail employees, etc). Not sure if all discounts are the same but several of the major companies (Leupold, Burris, Steiner) all offer the discount. Some offer it through "ExpertVoice" and some are directly from the company. ExpertVoice has always been pretty decent, the only problem is the shipping times are really slow sometimes but if you don't mind the wait, you can save a fair amount. Also some claim it is hard to get approved, but my experience has been excellent. Most companies limit you to one scope a year so sometimes two. Vortex offers some deals also if you qualify.
