Does it look like a Win 52b? If so i'll hazard a guess it was made on Winchester tooling and stamped SA ?? Never seen one myself? Can you post a picture?

Well that's news to me, but it sure isn't related the same Winchester model. Interesting rifle!

The nephew said it shoots fine. He said he bought it for $100

 

Inexpensive utility .22 from the 30's or '40s. If the bore is decent they are as accrrate as anybodys .22, then or now.

 

I asked the nephew if he was sure it was made by Springfield and had him read what was on the barrel to me. He said it was a Springfield made by J. Stevens Arms Company.

 

Savage used the Springfield name on Savage and Stevens low end guns. Savage took over Stevens about 1918 after WWI.

 

I have a 53b but it will not accept a scope. Very accurate gun, my favorite .22 I own.

 

You could have it drilled and tapped for a scope mount or possibly have the reciever groved also.

 

I have one too, although yours looks like it's in better shape. It shoots just fine!

 

Looks similar to the Stevens 66 of same vintage. Savage/Stevens/Springfield. Supposedly the "Springfield" name was dropped in 1948. Fun rifles.

 

:t I also own a "66"! Very accurate gun!! One thing that I find that's odd,..the magazine moves when you cock the bolt!! :t

 

Probably a Savage model 4 or similar. Looks nearly identical to mine. Even the stock.
Is yours a single shot by chance?
