Hi all,

Anyone here have have the "Book" of Smith & Wesson manufacture dates? If so I have a Smith that I would love to have dated. It's serial no. is CAE1XXX, any information would be appreciated.

Thanks & Good Shooting,

Jim

ZigZag & Majic...

Thank you both for your replies, your time is much appreciated. I purchased the 617, "pre-owned", as the used car dealers are prone to saying, and had no idea as to it's age. It is in good shape and, following a once over with a rag and some "Flitz", the gun looks like new.

Again thanks, and Good Shooting,

Jim

So Jim, give us some details. 4" 6" 8 3/8"? 6 or 10 shot? How is the action and accuracy?

p.s. Speaking in car terms, if a revolver can be "preowned" that why can't we "pre-trade" them? i.e. I'll give the dealer $150 to lease a NIB 617 for 5 years. At that time, I'll either trade him the gun back towards another new revolver or buy it outright ?? Works for me :D

Tacoma...

The 617 is a 6 inch, six shot with Target Trigger, Target Hammer & Target Sights. The gun is very accurate and a hoot to shoot. There is very little felt recoil due to the weight of the gun. The action is fairly good, but not on a par with my 586's that have been tuned. It is good enough, however, that I am in no real hurry to tune this gun.

I purchased this gun as I did not want a new "Smith" revolver with that damned "pimple" lock, it looks like hell and ruins the profile of the frame. This gun had a lot of fine scratches in the frame/cylinder, but, one hour with a rag and some "Flitz" and the gun looks better than new!

I am very satisfied with this firearm. What I really want, though, is a Model 17 with a full lugged 6 inch barrel in pristine condition. Wish me luck, I have been looking for two years now.

Good Shooting,

Jim

Very pretty...

I too, like the wood grips. Mine, however, came with the finger grove rubber. I may find some wood grips as well. I recently put some Tulipwood grips on a stainless Colt 1911. Those grips really "made" the gun. My parkerized Kimber 1911 wears Cocobolo and looks nice as well.

Out of curiosity, how much did you pay for your 617? I paid $400 for mine and couldn't be more pleased. They fetch as much as $500, used, around here!

Good Shooting,

Jim

ZigZag, $360.00 is a steal. I gave $488.00 for this one with the box and papers. It's been fired, but is like new. I liked the fact it didn't have the added safety and I'm a easy touch for the pretty wood grips. Also, it kind of goes with my 610. There are a lot of grips on gunsamerica and e-bay, but like you said, they're real proud of them.

Here's my 610

So many guns...

Old Smith & Wesson revolvers really "do it" for me too. I have two 586's, both 6 inch bbl's. One has nice wood grips and stock sights, the other has Pachmayer rubber finger grove grips and a Patridge front site.

I also have a stock 8 3/8" 686. It is nice, but I really like the appearance of blued guns a little better. The stainless is good for holster wear.

As previously stated, I recently purchased a 617. I also wish to find a nice 629, as well as a "pristine" 6 inch heavy lugged Mod. 17.

So...how about those Colt Pythons!!!

Good Shooting,

Jim
