Sight options for bl 22

The wife is pretty sure she wants a bl-22. She would like to put a peep sight on it. Does anybody know of one that will work? Would prefer not to drill and tap. Maybe mount to the grooved reciever. The Skinner barrel mount may also be an option. The doctor says no more archery competition and limited hunting bow shooting without major elbow work and therapy. EEK! A peep sighted 22 would be perfect to keep in practice shooting with a peep.(If she can find any ammo of course) Thanks Stringnut

Hi Stringnut,

I have a Win 9422 that has a Williams peep sight that mounts on the dovetail of a 22 receiver. I really like it but keep in mind that you may have to change the front sight to make it work. On my Winchester it appears to have a higher front sight but the Browning may be different.
The link below is to the page on Williams web-site that shows the various receiver sights. I believe the "WGRS-54" is the current version of what I'm using. The sight on my gun was installed years ago so I'm not sure if they've changed the sight at all over the years.
I'm sorry that in the picture the sight itself is a little fuzzy but I think you can get an idea of what the sight looks like.

When I got my BL-22 I was also interested in peep/receiver sights and I called Williams to see what they recommended. The answer was disappointing. Apparently receiver sights that mount to the 3/8" dovetail on the action would require a significantly higher front sight and no one makes one high enough.

I expect even if you had the receiver drilled and tapped for a side mounted peep sight (ala Marlin 39) you would still need a higher front sight than anyone makes.

I did call Browning with the same question but the "Customer Service" guy I talked to was clueless.

I definitely think Tim Skinner's work is worth looking into :t I have a similar, albeit home-made, peep sight aperture in place of the factory Marble's unit on my Henry H001T. It has worked surprisingly well for me, and does not alter (i.e. clutter up) the trim appearance of the rifle :bthumb: :Blasting_ I think something of this type, assuming your eyes work with it, would look and perform very well on your BL-22.

Kind Regards,

~SH~

Again, be sure the front sight on the BL-22 is high enough to work with whatever receiver sight you buy or fabricate or you can make a suitable replacement.

Williams told me that the factory front sight is too low for use with ANY receiver sight and no one makes a tall enough one. I have to believe them.

The fact that Model XYZ receiver sight will work on a Henry or a Winchester or a Marlin means nothing if you own a BL-22.

BL 22 sight

I just ordered a Marbles orange fire sight and a marbles fully adjustable rear sight from Brownells. This is the second BL-22 I have owned and the top rail is not really deep and a bit too short for most red dots. i did have a 1 inch. Ultra Dot on my last one. It worked great with millet steel rings. However if you want a fast handling great light gun they can not be beat !!! Williams says the frame is too this and they have a tendency to loosen up...

I picked up a BL22 a while back that fell short of "LNIB". It is still at the shop being made more to Trapper length and should find its way home in anther week or so.

I wanted a compact peep sight and went with the Skinner LoPro and an extra tall front because I wasn't sure how things would end up as far as elevation.

I asked the smith to mill a small flat round area with a tapped hole for the rear. The front will be dovetailed into the shortened barrel and be the windage adjustment.

[Very nice but none of them fit a grooved .22LR receiver ]

You are in error about NECG's products, 22/45fan.

Here is the NECG Grooved Receiver Peep Sight on my 9422

Like almost all top-mount peeps, however, it also needs a commensurately taller front sight blade.

The only peep I found to work OK, zero-wise, with issue-height front sights on leverguns is the Williams WM-96 I put on my Henry via D/T one screw.

One more time. Grooved receiver sights do not work on a BL22. Williams was very specific that the BL22 receiver will not accept their dovetail receiver sights.

They had no reason to tell me this if it wasn't true since I called them to specifically place an order knowing I could get a taller front sight from Skinner.

So, what works on your 9422, Henry, Marlin, etc. means nothing if you have a BL22.

OK, it works, sort of, but I can see why Williams is less than thrilled with the idea. The elevation slide is ovehanging the receiver on the left side by a lot and it looks vulnerable to any bump or hit.

The higher front is no longer a problem since Skinner and others can make one but the receiver mount looks less than secure.

Yeah, I don't like the way it mounts either. Not only would I feel unsafe, I just don't like the way it looks.

You'd almost need a special foam case to pack that rifle due to the over hang on both sides.

EXCUUUUUUZE ME !

FYI - Although I don't happen to own a BL-22 anymore, I HAVE mounted a "grooved receiver peep sight" on one.

All it took was a little thought and work - not suitable for anyone who just wants a fast-food/instant-gratification/drop-in alteration on a rifle with only a small percentage of the popularity/production, and ergo market demand for specific aftermarket products, than the vast array of other grooved receiver rifles out there, that sight products are made for.

Good Luck in your quest.

OK, would you care to be a little more detailed as to exactly how you did it? Ranting platitudes about "instant gratification" don't help much.

As noted, Williams does not make a receiver sight they recommend for the BL-22 and the photos provided by Hilljack clearly show why.

If you were able to make a secure mount for the BL-22, even if it required extra work, please share it with us.

Don't know which sights Pete44ru is referring to but the Williams 54 grooved sight slipped right on my BL22 Grade II, but the front sight needed to be quite a bit taller and I didn't want to fool with that so I scoped it. The 54 with a higher front sight would work.
