Can the magazine tubes be shortened a couple of rounds?

I don't see why not, but you'd need to be careful about how you go about it lest you ruin your mag tube and inner. On the outer, I'd shorten the end that goes into the receiver, whereas on the inner, I'd shorten the outer end and redrill it for refitting the end knob and pin.

Marlin 60 was available with 18 and 14 round tube magazines and someone told me they made a 10 round one too but I have never seen one. You may be able to buy the two parts you need from Marlin or from Gun Parts. It may save you some trouble if they don't cost all that much.

The 14 shot version was marketed under Marlin Glenfield Model 75C Carbine model.

I'm not sure why you would want to.

The tube magazine is attached to the barrel with a pinned band into a dovetail slot on the underside of the barrel.

You would need a new dovetail cut to attached a shortened magazine tube.

If you are shortening the tube, you will need to shorten the inner tube and spring. If this isn't done right, you could introduce feed problems.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Just a problem I have with not being able to leave things as is.

Re; not being able to leave things alone....

I understand. You're picking the right model to try something on, you can get a used Marlin 60 for $100+/- if you kill it, you're not hurt too bad.

I would think the shortest mag tube like the 99M1, just past the end of the stock would look the best. Your new dovetail could be cut and would be hidden by the stock. You may need to relieve the mag tube channel in the stock for the pinned tube band.

I took a perfectly good Model 60 and combined it with a 99M1 and a 995. Made the 99M1 with the 60 internals and made the 60 receiver and barrel a box magazine fed with the internals and walnut stock from the 995.

I have a 1985 vintage receiver, model 995 pitted barrel, broken 995 trigger guard, a model 60 stock, model 60 long outer and inner mag tube, model 60 side plates and model 99M1 hammer, sear, springs and 2 piece feed throat left over.

I'm keeping the parts before anyone asks, I'm not gonna stop fixing up old basket case Marlins.

The more I think about this, and this is my opinion, the full length mag tube is ok looking, but I prefer the look of no magazine tube and like the box magazine fed style. Again, to me, the long barrel and shorter mag tube looks stupid. The 99M1 shortest style looks cool. I have the pitted barrel to try and cut a dovetail. I could cut the long tubes I have. I could use the 2 piece feed throat. When it comes down to it, I have all the parts to make another gun. Crap.
