Hello.

Years ago, I inherited an old Savage Model of 1909. It sat in the back of a closet for years.
Just recently, I dug it out and decided to do some research, and that brought me to this forum.
I was pleasantly surprised by the interest in this old rifle.

I will be posting some photos soon. One big question! What is the value of this item considering it is 100% original, in working order and fair condition?

Welcome to Rimfire Central Tom!

Might bring $500 on a good day. Depends on what "fair condition" means. Pictures are always welcome although I'll caution you that we have firm rules about no offers to buy or sell outside of our Marketplace so if any pop up it will get the thread deleted. Not saying that's the case here, just a word to the wise.

Gun Broker is a good place to research "street price" on firearms. savage 1909 For Sale – Buy savage 1909 at GunBroker.com

If you need help or have site questions feel free to ask.

The 1909's were replaced in the catalogs by the 1912's when they came out, so they were not listed very long. The only variation I have found in them is the change to the new type of ejector seen in a very few, that came out about the time of the introduction of the 1912's since they all have it. They were serial numbered in with the 1903's and started at number 101,000A in Feb of 1910. In the records and on the guns the letter A was added after the number to designate it's a 1909. Starting them at an even number left a gap in the serial number series but that was filled with 1903's, so serial numbers just before that are for 1903's and show later ship dates. There also appears to be a gap that was not filled at the end of 1909 production based on observed serial numbers of 1909's & 1903's. Steve99 and I have recorded numbers of almost 400 1903 & over 30 1909's and there is gap of over 8700 from the highest 1909 to the next 1903 and I don't think we have a gap of even 1000 anywhere else. It appears there was a minimum of 11,500 1909's made based on the highest number I've seen, I would not expect to find numbers much more than a few hundred higher based on the size of the largest gaps in the ones recorded.

Having a small size rifle intended for youths that had an easy to lose magazine was probably not a good idea.

If anyone owning either a Model of 1903 or 1909 Savage RF rifle would like an estimate of year of manufacture, I can provide you that based on your serial number. Sav22 and I have this spreadsheet we update as new SN's are noted. The year of manufacture is based on known factory lettered rifles. PM me or just use this thread.

I posted about this one a while ago as it needed a re-line and chamber work. I spent far too much money to bring it back to life - but all the s/n's matched so I could not bring myself to part it out!

For your database:
Savage 1909 s/n 103219
‘M’ + s/n on internal receiver wall
‘A’ + s/n on bottom tang
s/n on buttplate and buttstock

Thanks 22lrJohn for the SN on your 1909. Your rifle was made in 1910 based on factory letters newer and older than your rifle's SN. With the expense laid out, I'd start wearing it out right away.
