Savage Magazine issues?

I have a Savage MKII BV 22lr rifle. The factory 5 rd. mag. won't reliably cycle. It fails to chamber every other round for some reason. Is this a known problem? The 10 rd. mag. work just fine. I prefer to use the 5 rd. mag. while hunting or carrying it in the woods.

Thanks, NYH1.

My mags worked fine, but I’d heard stories of the lips spreading and the staking on the bodies being insufficient, so I bratted mine with a brass hammer and screw driver. Also had to take a saw file and round the leading edge to protect the bullet lead from being shaved while loading—guess I’m just use to working on everything I buy over the last 30 plus years!

But with my .17 WSM BMAG problems, I needed parts for another problem of misfires and Savage required parts ordered only by a gunsmith. We discovered my original firing pin and spring were fine after receiving new ones. The many misfires were due to the firing pin return spring was too long and created a bind. My 'smith pal removed a few rings of the spring and problem solved. If your BMAG starts having misfires, consider it is probably the firing pin return spring, not the pin or main spring. That is, if your bolt innards are clean. Gunsmith pal also convinced me to soak my bolt in gasoline to really clean it and that works great. My bolt was clean while I was having the many misfires.

NYH1 - Have you tried to 'fiddle' with the lips of the mag? This is a "LOW-END" Savage so QC has a low-bar. Just play with those lips ;) I have a couple 64s that have the pot-metal mags and I have to 'tap' them often to keep them aligned.
No, I haven't. I took @Toomany22s advice and ordered a few new ones, $16.99 at Midway.

That rifle is one of the 'best buys' on the 22LR market.
Oh, for sure, the rifles been great, no complains there at all. I'm kind of eye balling the 93 BRJ (22 WMR). We'll see!

Thanks, NYH1.

Can you get any more oxymoronic, or is society really that stupid to believe it? Buy cheap and live with the problem or complain about it to the WWW where no one listens!!!

Your opening post contradicts this reply/statement! Just sayin
How? The 5-rd. magazine is the problem not the rifle. With the 10-rd. mag. it works 100% of the time.

Same here -- multiple Mark II's with no issues except for one mag that came with a rifle that I bought used (and a little abused but it was cheap). The mag had some feed issues, so I compared it with a good mag, tweaked the lips a little (so it looked like a "good" mag), and now it's working fine.

And concerning the "abused" rifle, it wouldn't feed from ANY mag. Turned out to be the magazine catch had been Bubba'd by the previous owner, presumably so a full mag could be inserted without opening the bolt. I fixed the catch, it worked fine, and turned out to be a very accurate little rifle.
