For some reason S&W never catalogued this model and most went to a USPS contract. Basically a Model 10 chambered in 22LR this model makes a lot of sense. Just like the Colt Official Police in 22LR only the Colts are a lot easier to find. But getting back to the Model 45, to me it is a great training tool and was used as such by the Post Office and various police departments. The more I shoot mine the more I like it and it has become my favorite S&W revolver.

Most small PO's had a revolver in the safe. I saw the one in my Dad's PO many times, I was just a kid though but recall my Dad saying it was a ".38 Smith & Wesson". He worked for Railway Express for a while before WW II. The agents that traveled with the car usually had firearms. Prior the the GCA of 1968 most firearms were shipped via REA.

The Model 45's were used as training revolvers for the USPS Postal Inspector service.
