So I finally decided to get my very own 22lr rifle 😆. Let me explain, I own a few 22lr rifles but I never thought of them as "real" firearms or a serious caliber. So I treated them more like toys/training tools than I did a serious tool. I didn't properly care for the rifles nor did I respect them, they are full of scratches and rust 😂. Dozen's of family members and friends learned how to shoot or about firearms with those very rifles and a pair of 22 pistols. Ever since my daughter showed interest in shooting I knew I was gonna be buying her, her own dedicated rifle and teaching her proper maintenance/care. We landed on a Ruger Rimfire Precision (RPR).

My baby with her baby 😆

Ever since my God son found out I was taking my daughter to the shooting range. He was so heartbroken that I didn't take him. So I started bringing him along. After a few trips it's obvious that these 2 are gonna be shooters for life. So after a few trips to the range and my daughter clearly not happy about having to share her rifle with other people 😄. I decided to surprise my God son with his very own rifle, so off to the gun shop Turner's in Reseda we went. I pushed him towards a bolt action at the time there was 2 rifles on sale Howa 1100 & Springfield 2020. He didn't care for either and ended up picking a Ruger 10/22.

I rebuilt my Marlin 795 thinking ok I build it to my liking and I'll adopt it as my own Here's a thread about the Marlin 795 . I can't seem to fall in love with it as to many people have handled and shot her before 😆. I fell like I'm trying to force my self to fall in love with a prostitute 😆. So after shooting my God son's Ruger I couldn't stop thinking about having my own and how cool it would be that all 3 of us would be shooting Rugers and that our magazines would be compatible. So Turner's had the 10/22 (31210) on sale for $220 and I just couldn't help myself. So I ordered 1.

So it came out to a total of $312.13 that's a good price for California 😂. I look forward to squeezing every once of performance out of this rifle .

Unfortunately that won't be the case. My God son has been forbidden to make any modifications including optics until he can print 5" groups at 50 yards with irons. Then he can do whatever HIS budget will allow 😂.

As for my Ruger I don't have an option it's gonna need some type of optic as it has no irons. I'm a budget minded shooter. I'm a bang for your buck type of guy. So I plan on seeing what kind of performance I can squeeze out of this model without spending any additional money. My plan is this.

1. Run minimum 500 rounds of mixed ammo. Make sure she's a runner.

2. After break in. Shoot for groups at 50 yards using various bulk ammo. Record all data. Will be using a old Simmons 3x9-40 that iv had for God knows how long.

3. I will be making DIY modifications to try and squeeze out every once of performance & reliability out of my rifle with out spending any additional money😂.

@michael51392

Great story and awesome to introduce two new young shooters to the hobby. We need more interest from youngsters.

Just bought a 31210 for my son and have already changed out the stock. Next will be a red dot, then a trigger or hammer kit. It’s a dam problem🤣

If I could make one suggestion. I waited ~30 years to buy electronic hearing protection. 15 of those in law enforcement. Get some for the kids. Makes range communication/safety so much easier. I even wear foam ear plugs along with elec. ear pro when indoors and just increase the amplification to allow myself to hear voices.

That's gotta be some of the best range advise iv ever gotten. Gonna look in to it immediately. 👍

For a budget minded shooter that needs an optic you might wanna check this out. The Bushnell Prime 4-12x40. Has a side focus parallax adjustment and is (imo) a great deal at $90 at Eurooptic.com. It retails for $230.

I also use electronic hearing protection. Walkers electronic muffs. They can be had for pretty cheap. Allow you to hear whispers at good distances but immediately block out loud noises. Great for the range and hunting.

Man I got curious and checked Amazon for 10/22 accessories. There's a few parts on there that are very affordable with good reviews. Anybody use Amazon parts to customize there 10/22? I'm definitely interested in there extended mag release and the extended charging handle. I have a $130 credit that Im fighting not to use 😂.

Alright I couldn't help myself. I have no shame. My addiction just got the best of me. I tried and tried to remind myself "your the 1 in control" but it didn't work.
Image

So now this is currently on its way to my place 😂. I'm amazed at just how affordable parts for the Ruger 10/22 are. I'll be the lab rat to test Amazon's 10/22 parts 😆. Still going with the Simmons 3-9x40 that I have sitting at home just got a scope level. I for sure want this rifle to have a Arca rail, maybe even some type of rear monopod. I want this to be my new Jack of all trades type rifle.

oooh weee ooohhh... welcome to the rabbit hole.
How many times have we heard a new 1022 owner making "the pledge" NOT to mod his
or her new 1022, but to shoot it stock until the cows come home.

Well, here they come.
Image

You'll want to get a trigger job by the best gunsmith you can find/afford.
(this for your OWN 1022, not necessarily for the kids' rifles).
I know you don't want to spend money, but this will enhance your 1022 experience
all out of proportion to what you spend. Just do it, you'll thank RFC later.

Your 3x9 scope will likely work just fine. The only reason to buy one with more magnification is if you intend to shoot competition at longer range than 50 yards.
If so, you better dig deep in your pockets... you'll need to mod your 1022
ruthlessly in order to qualify in such rarified company.

If you don't intend to shoot competition, you don't need to listen to .22 snobs as
they discuss tiny groups at 100 yards. One simple mod I can heartily recommend is
the "tape bedding" mod, which is explained on this forum quite well. Cost is only
what you pay for a roll of aluminum tape at Wally World. Or maybe zero if you
PM me. I'll send you enough to do your 1022. *grins
This mod keeps the receiver from moving around in the stock as the gun cycles.
It really helps the rifle shoot consistently smaller groups.

Another mod I love is the "bike tube mod" which I also love. I read about it on this
forum and bought myself a bicycle tube at Wally mart for small money. I have since
cut it, and glued a piece of it under the forend of my 1022 stock. I have so much bicycle tube material left, PM me if you want some. *laughs You only need an inch or so (25mm).
And I can tell you it's an excellent mod that doesn't cost much and makes a big
difference. It stabilizes the factory barrel and lets the rifle make smaller groups.

Who knew? I would have NEVER figured these mods out for myself. So I am
grateful to this forum. I am very happy with my 1022, and will list my mods if you
ask me. But my suggestion to a new 1022 owner is to begin with a trigger job
and get your trigger down to 2.5 pounds or so, with a crisp break.
If you can't find a gunsmith you can trust, just buy a Ruger BX trigger and install
that. It will work much better than the factory setup. That's what I have.
Image

Guys on this forum will boast about trigger pulls less than two pounds,
but I believe these are actually insane. Unsafe... NOT family friendly.
A tragedy waiting for a place to happen. Don't do it. Especially on a .22
that you intend for family shooting fun. This is my own statement and belief.
Others will disagree and claim that the hair trigger is safe. I don't believe them.
I don't want one, and would not allow one in my home. End of rant...

Well and so... good luck as you work your way down into the rabbit hole that is
the Ruger 1022. If you like to read books, I recommend "Customize the Ruger 1022"
by James and Kathleen House. An excellent volume which describes and analyzes
various mods to the Ruger 1022. Buy the most recent edition, of course. This
arena keeps changing... it's difficult for book authors to keep up. So we need to
support them.

I am the best gunsmith I can afford 😆. I enjoy working, modifying, and learning the mechanics of my firearms as much as I enjoy shooting them. I will be recording data prior to modifying my rifle. I would be perfectly happy with a 2.5lb trigger anything lighter on a semi would concern me. I'm hoping for .5" @ 50yards with common off the shelf ammo.

Already got this in the mail 😂. Just measured stock I have to shop for a Arca rail now 😆. I got the picatiny rail just for the torc screws factory straight blade screws just plain bug me 😂.

Man I had a rough afternoon started with my little princess acting more like a tasmanian devil. Took almost a whole hour of beckering back and forth just to starting heading to my car. Right before I get in I realize crickey I don't have my wallet. Head back in side to get my wallet but before I grab my wallet. I get a rumble in my tummy so head straight to the crapper. Do what I had to do and tell my brat let's go. Never grab my wallet. Drove 35min to Turner's wait 1.5 hours to be called only to realize I never grabbed my wallet 😂. I was so disappointed in my self I used words I definitely shouldn't have used in front of my daughter. The worst part was I was the guy complaining about how customers that are there to pick up already purchased goods shouldn't have to wait. It's rare that I forget my wallet or keys but I'm only human. My little princess noticed that I was being hard on my self and turned everything around with a few simple words followed by a hug. I instantly felt better and stopped by a McDonald's for a milkshake and fries for us to snack on the ride home. I'm happy I have my credit card linked on the McDonald's APP 😂. Anyways got a few more parts online.
Image

So much for keeping it stock 😜.

Alright finally got a chance to take out the Ruger and she did not disappoint.
Image

Unfortunately I was not able to sight in the scope as something was way off spec and I couldn't zero. I ran out of adjustment and it was still shooting left and low. That didn't stop me from shooting the Ruger. I ran approximately 400 rounds with out 1 single hiccup. Literally didn't have 1 failure.
Image

I didn't shoot any of the Aguila thru the 10/22, I shoot that ammo thru the Ruger RPR. The wind was all over the place and didn't allow for any serious data collection.
Image

Once I realized that the rifle couldn't be sighted. I started shooting at steel @ 200yards just using hold over. Again I just wanted to get rounds thru it. Now the fun begins 😜.

#23 ·
Image
here's the inside of the receiver after the first approximate 400 rounds. No visible metal shavings, or visible scoring 😆 that's a good thing.
Image

Bolt and charging handle again nothing to worry about.
Image

God that rail is killing me 😆 appears it was dipped in paint several times 😆.
Image

Exterior of the receiver, I think looks good. The finish is as tough as it needs to be. The barrel is on there tight but I'm sure il be able to get it off.

#24 ·
Image

So braking down the Ruger, Im really quite impressed.
Image

Barrel crown is beautiful. The finish on the barrel is nice.
Image
chamber end isn't as pretty but it looks rights 😆.
Image

That highly polished bolt with the company logo is just plain sexy. Bolt is simple and rugged.
Image

Here's the receiver fully in the nude. Exterior paint is great. Inside well it's what you would expect (or should anyways)😆.
Image

Missing paint chips.
Image

Again paint chips. Considering $220 price tag I'm super happy with my purchase again I'm well aware 400 rounds ain't nothing especially for a 22. I look forward to spending more time with this 1 at the range 😆. Trigger is currently under construction.

#28 ·
Only complaint I have is the painted receiver and rail. I’ll probably replace the rail on mine with a better quality rail.
I knew for a fact the second I saw the rail on the Ruger it had to go. I fought it for a while but for $10 why not and for some reason the flat head hardware just bugs me.
Image

Cleaned factory holes. I put a healthy layer of thread locker on the bottom of the new rail and new hardware. Torqued hardware to 15 inch pounds. Wiped exses thread locker off using soapy water on a clean rag. Now it's a matter of waiting 72 hours.
BX on left, OEM on right. See the base of the hammer? View attachment 521618
Alright I don't have a BX trigger but with a little elbow grease it should come out better than a BX trigger (I hope).

#30 ·
Alright got the trigger components all polished up.
Image

Hammer was filed to reduce pull weight and reduce creep.

Bolt hold back plate was filed for auto release.

Hammer strut was completely polished for smoother operation.

Extended charging handle was polished to aid in reliability.

I did reassemble the trigger just to test function, I wanna say it felt like it was in the 2 1/2 pound range. I still have a few things that have to be done before I call the trigger good to go

#31 ·
Alright quick update
Image

The spring on the Amazon extended charging handle was obviously lighter. This Ruger literally didn't have a single failure in 400 rounds. That tells me use the factory spring, so I swapped the spring.
Image

The Amazon charging handle had a ton of sharp corners and was super gritty. So I polished the handle itself and gave the spring guide rod another quick polishing.
Image

Already had the Dremel out so gave the receiver a quick polishing were the bolt and receiver make contact.
Image

Here's the end result. Super happy with this setup so far. Easily the smoothest action out of all my semi 22 rifles.
Image

Polished the entrance of the chamber to help aid in reliability.
Image

Current state. Finally finished mating the hammer to the sear. I spent a ton of hours doing this. I did it all by hand with no jigs.
Image

The trigger is almost ready to be assembled, just gotta come up with an adjustable over travel option. This trigger now feels like it's under 2 pounds.
