Rimfire BR Rifle Rest Set Up

What is your idea of the best rest set up for Rimfire BR. ? What is allowed?
I use a old school hart front rest and rear bag set up. It is not ideal for score type shooting. I have used it in CF score matches shooting a 6ppc, 10.5 lb LV Rifle which is a double handicap against them 30 cal 13.5 lb ‘ers. I have shot many 250 25x, almost always a 500 47-48x. So it can be done but it is not ideal and requires a lot of shooter input as you are handling the gun to move from target to target quickly. Can I use this set up for RF BR ? I mean it’s what I got.

If your hart rest has windage and elevation adjustments then you can use it for RF BR matches if you’re just getting started in the sport. You will find that a one piece rest is the most common rest used in RF BR in the Unlimited Class. Most Sporter/Factory class shooters use a bipod with a rear bag or mechanical rest. Best thing to do is get out and shoot some matches and see what everyone is using.

Correct - A three card match is three 25-scoring target "cards". I personally would use more than 25 warm-up/sighter shots, but I'm a newbie to RF BR. You do not say if you will be shooting Factory or Unlimited class. Using a non-windage adjustable front rest with a rear bag is pretty common for Factory class, but you will likely find yourself at a disadvantage in UL class where many/(most?) shooters use one piece rests with adjustable windage and elevation. Bring your wind flags!

BTW: "I have shot many 250-25X"
Wow! Nice shooting. With a LV 6PPC in Score.
In many years of shooting IBS Score I was never able to pull off one of those.
(And I did pretty good with a HV 30BR.)

I have like 200 M+ left, if I can get them tuned.
I would have to shoot UL. It is a club match and I would just be going to chat and learn. Yea if I can get a hold of someone there and it would be ok for me to come shoot and hang out. I could make it. I used to be a member there years ago and have shot that range CF many times. Tough range. But I really don’t know anyone there. Where as a club like a hour away from me, I know all them guys well. But they don’t do RF only CF.

I put a Shadetree top on my Hart rest. I use that and a rear SEB bag. I usually attach a bag rider to my rifle fore end to get it to 3". That way I don't need to change bags.

Yes I have been looking at them for some years now. It would be a good economical solution. I’m sure the one piece’s are quite expensive and right now I’m working on a Rifle build so it has taken all the spare money I have had. lol. I had the opportunity to shoot a HV 30 BR in a Farley joystick and like the biggest Edgewood rear bag. That rear bag was 1/4 the size of the bench. I said no wonder I can’t beat you guys. It really wasn’t me. When I say I had a world record accurate 6ppc, I’m not BS’n ya. It was capable of a .125,agg. At that time a .150 agg was the world record. I tried to shoot in registered matches. But I just couldn’t get it done. My fault not the Rifles. I finally burned up that barrel. My other barrel could only shoot .170 at best. I have had a few legendary shooters joking around with me saying if they had my Rifle they would win every match. I had offered to let them shoot it. They were just razing me. I had one match I shot three .170 groups in a row, going into the 4th relay I was in first place. I lost it shot a monster group and pretty much was out of it. I think I came in like 6th out of I don’t really remember maybe 12-14. So yea I usually fell apart or just completely botched it. Yesterday was my birthday. The big 57. So yea I ordered a 2500x.

Yea I’m going to try and do that. Some quick thread drift. When they say 3 card match, what do they mean? 75 record shots ? + sighters ? So I could get away with 100 rounds?
The standard is to consider 1 box (50 rounds) per card/target for most shooters. There will be some days you will shoot more than this but for the most part I'd say you will shoot less. I shoot a minimum of 35 rounds per card but more like around 40-45 rounds per card.

As a good ammo saver, be sure to use your left over test lots to foul with but be sure to use like ammo. What I mean by this is use Eley junk test lots to foul for Eley primary lot etc. There are some people having luck using Eley as fouler ammo and then using Lapua as the primary ammo but understand this is sacrilege to some as well. I have had no issue with this myself. There is some extra rounds needed to go the other way that will be apparent on target. It is all about the bullet lubricant on this and properties the two very different lubes have.

Thanks Tad, that brings back memories and refreshes my brain. 50 per card/ record target sounds right. I’ve been a runner if I see two shots hit where I want I’ll take off making slight hold off adjustments as I’m going. If I see a flag change then I’ll shoot more sighters. This all depends on how it is going. I’m going to go and hang out and see how it goes. I’ll shoot just to get some practice. I found another place that I used to be a member that shoot 22lr matches also. I never knew because it’s a 1,000 yard range. I know a few guys there. So looks like I can find a few places that I could scratch my BR itch at next year.
Once again I have no intention of becoming some all out match shooter. If I could shoot a few matches a year would be great. I think maybe some hardcore veterans would frown on that.

No one will frown on a casual shooter by no means at all. Everyone is there for a good time or they are there for the wrong reasons because no one is getting paid to be there for sure lol. Just have fun with it and enjoy the awesome people you will meet. I have met some of the best people I have ever met in life from RFBR matches.

Sorry to derail the thread from the questions about rest setup. It is a very important topic to discuss and may be just as important as the rifle that is set into it.
