Remington Model 510/Targetmaster

Whenever I try to look up the "history" of the model 510/Targetmaster on Wickepedia or other sights, I always find a listing for the 500 series starting with 504 going thru 582, but none of the lists include the 510. I find the 511 but nothing on the 510.

Where can I find a history of the 510? Wikipedia has a history of the 512 and 514.

Thanks

I see what you mean. I went looking for the Remington website that once existed that gave an overview of all the Remingtons old and new but I could not find it. The current Remington website I found only gives information about models currently in production. If the old website still exists maybe someone will come along and point you to it.

I have no idea where you can find a copy but the John Gyde book ".22 Remington Rifles" is the bible. Be warned though, if you were to find a copy you will become an addict. You will want one of each rifle in the book not just the 510 and you will start down a slippery slope. The 510 is one of my favorites because of its simplicity and beautiful lines.

Also, just participate in this forum. Some really good folks here who are always pleased to help.

I am pretty sure the 510 came out in 1934 or 1935. I've got one of the earliest ones, with an actual serial number on the left underside of the barrel and no date codes. Fitted it with a Williams 5D, and it's the most enjoyable single shot I have ever handled. Wonderfully accurate full sized rifles with an amazingly simple and effective single shot adapter. My basic understanding is that back in the day, they were considered a somewhat higher end offering from Remington. Aside from that, I haven't been able to find anything else. I'll be following this one.

Don't think they were a higher end offering? They are nothing more than a 511 set up as a single shot. Stock without magazine cut out and an adaptor to work as single shot. They are a nice old walnut and blued steel rifle that can usually be found for a reasonable price. Their history should closely follow that of the 511. The 511 came out in 1939 I think? That means the 510 was out soon after?

510 produced from 1939 till 1962 + as 510x 1965 till 1967 - 1962 till 1964 was nylon 10 with plastic stock - if you can find a copy of remington arms , the american history by alden hatch you will find some history in chapter 34 - John Gydes book is the best but is now very expensive - 510 came about after the remington dupont merger - idea was to produce a product line of rifles that utilized same tooling + many interchangeable parts -

Thanks for the ad.
Question is, the margins on the barrel looks to be (7b, or 78). I have not been able to locate any information on regards to age. I inherited this from my grandfather some 30 years ago. Great shooting piece, I would just like to know more about it now that I will be paying it down to my grandson.
Thanks

There is letters not numbers and they are on the left side just ahead of the action. Two letters. First one is the month second for the year. I believe 1943-1953 they used double matching letters for the year but the first letter in the three letter years is still the month. There is info on here about the letters for finding the month and year. May be in the Rem. 40-X sub forum.

Thanks noelekal for posting this link but it still leaves me with a question.

I got a 510 in trade for taking parts of another guys stack of 510's and making one whole, good trade I thought. It's a questionable shooter and further study cleared things up a little. The bore in the muzzle is off center about .060". I'll chase this so things are centered around the bore and my bet is, it'll shoot. Scoping the bore there is lead build up at the muzzle and further inspection, slugging it, there's a substantial burr at this point. Must have been a Monday or a Friday job at the Remington plant.

The question I have is, the letters stamped are RRX. November '68 or November/November of '29? I did the trade back in '02/'03 and it's been a barrel of interest for my students and the guy I got it from is 50+ and he said his dad gave it to him in his teens. Never shot worth a hoot but he always attributed that to the 14# trigger pull, which it has.

So that helped...
Are they out of order then? RR being '46 and X is December? According to the chart there isn't a single X in that time frame - only a double X. Same guy that drilled it off center was dyslexic and stamped it wrong too - maybe the R's were just stamped upside down? I don't know anyone that does stuff like that

Remington Model 510/ Targetmaster

Hi everyone, Interesting post on the manufacturing date RRX for a 510 remington.I have a model 512 remington with the same date RRX. My rifle is all original blue and wood. It is in very good shape, with clear lettering. For a long time i have wondered about the date of manufacture myself. The only explanation i could come up with is 1946 Dec. For whatever reason they put the month behind the year,i don't know.My rifle does have the little up and down arrow in front of the first R, nothing to do with the manufacturing date,i'm sure. Anyway, i just wanted to share that with you guys!
thanks, Charlie

the first letter is always the month code the year code could be one or two letters -there never was an [ RX ] year code - could you post a clear picture ? - could the arrow be a Y ? -
