I ran into a well used Model 4 chambered for .32 rimfire at the LGS. The bore appeared to be shot out and of course you don't find 32RF ammo on the shelves anymore. Has anyone ever heard of converting one of these rifles to 22LR with a barrel liner? Any info would be appreciated.

.32 rimfire to .22 long rifle conversion

I always wanted a Remington Model 4 rolling block to shoot garden pests. So when I found one on gunbroker for a reasonable price I grabbed it. The rifle was an early model solid frame chambered in .32 rimfire manufactured around 1895. Since .32 rimfire is virtually non existent I decided to have the barrel relined and rechambered in .22 long rifle. I had the rifle shipped directly to Bill Benner to reline the barrel and modify the extractor and the firing pin. When the rifle arrived back from the gunsmith the stocks were solid but stained with age so I purchased some semi inletted blanks and fitted them to the rifle. The early model number 4's had fixed sights. I located an adjustable rear sight from a later model number 4 rolling block. I had to mill a wider dovetail in the barrel to accommodate the new sight. The final step was to replace the front sight with a hi-vis fiber optic sight. The rifle has become my favorite rimfire. It is a joy to shoot its light and quick to point and a box of ammo lasts a long time with a single shot rifle. If you have a number 4 hiding in the gun cabinet, I encourage you to get it out and enjoy the nostalgia of shooting a 100 year old rifle.
