Remington 597 Issue (Help Please)

My Remington 597..
Chamber a round, rifle fires, shell ejects

Second round chambers, hammer falls, Rifle no fire

Eject the live shell, rifle chambers a third round, fires just fine. (Then it does the same thing as stated above)

I've tried:
Checking guide rods (loose)
Changing hammer springs
Cleaning

Next to yank apart a working 597 and swap trigger groups.

Any ideas?

Firing pin dents the rounds. Used two different batches of CCI Mini Mags

Sounds like the bolt isn't going quite far back enough for reset. Time to clean, especially the guide rods & springs would be my first step.

ETA- if you already did that, just seen in your other thread, the new "better hammer" spring would be my next suspect.
I put the factory Spring & hammer back in and tried another factory hammer & spring combo from a rifle that functions.

First issue I've ever had with a 597. I think I'll try a deeper chamber clean and tear the bolt down to look in there.

I've been messing with this rifle for 9.5 hours today. I'm putting it down for today!

Before you put the trigger group back in... pull each guide rod spring all the way back with a fingernail, if you didn't chew em all off in frustration, to make sure they're not caught up in the bolt. If caught in the bolt don't force em back lest ya mangle the ends of em.

Make sure your recoil bumper is all the way to the rear and in the hole. Polish the curved surface on the back of the bolt where the hammer rides and the mating surface on the hammer. Maybe a small dab of grease there also. Some 597's take 300 rounds of ammo to break in! Usually mini mags are the best but try some other high velocity ammo?

Because Al didn't know about the peening until the pix were posted after 3:51 today HUSH?

I hope you ground the nipple of excess metal off the breech face also Jam.
It might just be the angle of the pic but the extractor slot metal looks a wee bit pushed into the chamber, or not?

The extractor cutout is a real mess as is the barrel face.:mad: I've dressed everything as best I can, much better. Put a spare VQ extractor in the bolt haven't test fired since.

I've now spent 3 days on this $100 rifle...:mad::mad:
Before you test fire make sure the last shot hold open functions lest the breech possibly get peened again. Just pull the bolt back with an empty mag installed.

I've got 22 yrs or so into tweaking $120 when new one. ;)

Bummer the previous owner was so abusive.

How do you remove the sear from the trigger group to replace it? I'm planning replacing the hammer which I know how to do, but I want to replace the sear because I suspect both are just worn from not cleaning enough and the hammer will not lock with the sear anymore. I've tried to clean and reassemble multiple times with no success.
