Should I buy a Remington 541x from a friend of mine? Is it difficult to mount a scope and how accurate are they? Thanks

I was looking at one on Gunbroker..........UNTIL I searched here and found this from Hushkaboom.

"The 541X was a military contract rifle for training and doesn't have a match chamber or a good trigger. Most won't shoot up to real target rifle standards. If you are a collector their value is in getting one as new with box, papers, sights, etc. If you want a truly accurate rifle get one of the other models mentioned above or a real target rifle. The 540 series are basic economy target rifles. I agree with rdssert for a used gun price in 95%. 37, 40X Winchester 52, Anshcutz 54's are your real deal target rifles."

Hushkaboom is one of our most expert members, so I take him seriously.

If you want a target rifle get one, If you want a sporter get one, the 541X is neither. A ton of nice sporters will outshoot it and they look better doing it, same thing goes for real target rifles. If I want accuracy I don't want a 541X and if I want good looks and portability I don't want it either. I wouldn't give you 3 dollars for it if I had to use it in a match or carry it afield. I would be encumbered on both counts!

Have you seen the prices on 40's 52's and 54's - even ratty ones?
:oops::oops::oops:😱😱😱
I just clipped trying to get a couple of 82G's - they went for about 900 shipped!!!!!!
Prices are getting way out of hand.
I'd take loan out and buy a brand new FWB, Walther or Anschutz.
If they still had wood stock instead of terminator lookin ones i'd
probably have one on order.
And FWB and Walthers come with sights

I have seen a few still in the box and foil. Collectors of training rifles will pay good money for those. The one I had was drilled for weaver bases and I put a scope on it. Shot good but not great. It was missing the Williams rear sight but I was able to acquire one of those and make the rifle complete. The original owner bought a couple from CMP in the box and foil. Drilled for mount and took it on a couple of sage rat hunts. Numrich used to sell replacement stocks but no longer list them. I think the 540 series mentioned are an upgrade from the 541X.

I bought a Remington 541X on Gunbroker about 6 weeks ago, nos, unfired and in the box with the original iron sites for $680.+ shipping. Bolt was very rough to cycle during the first trip to the range, so had my local smithy go thru it, polished up the bolt, and chamber, and works great. He said they're quality control inspector really dropped the ball on this one ! Anyway, shoots great , and second only to my Winchester 52 .

Years ago I bought 541X that had very good metal but the stock was cracked and it was missing the rear sight. The price was like $175. So I bought it as a project rifle. I had access to my brother's gunsmithing shop. So I drilled and tapped the receiver for scope bases and repaired and customized the stock. My brother also did a really nice trigger job on it. It shot pretty well after that but not as well as I hoped

So several years later I decided to send the rifle to Brian Voelker. He did his basic accurizing work and when I got the rifle back it shot really well. The fact that it was years later and I had a much better selection of ammo probably helped but I know the work that was done didn't hurt either.

The rifle remains one of my best shooters today. I need to get it back to the range one of these days soon to see how it compares to some of the new models I now have

It's always been my understanding the 541-S has a tighter chamber than all the others but it was never actually been advertised as a match chamber. I haven't owned a 541-T or 541-THB but I don't recall that they had anything other than a typical sporting chamber

My favorite during this era was the 540X and 540XR. Mini 40X’s.

Last year, there was a 540 cleaning up in ARA Factory Class till it got banned. ☹
I can't help but wonder about some of the decisions made about what rifles are allowed and what aren't for ARA factory class. Some could argue that the 540 and 540X are target rifles but they're really not much different than some of these CZs that are allowed. The CZ have much better triggers available too. I guess you could argue that the 540 and 540X are single shots but then why aren't the 541-S, 541-T and 541-THB repeaters allowed?

Couldn’t agree more. Don’t see a lot of daylight between 50 year old junior target rifles and a CZ 457 MTR. Not to mention a Win 75T and the 541 series listed above.

One conclusion. Modern, entry level precision rifles are not competitive with similar versions made 50 years previously.

I dunno. Guess we’ll never know.
