Dot On A Ruger

Ken
What Ruger do tou have ?
if ya got the bullbarrel things are easy , get a set of rings for a 7/8 scope [not 1in.] put em on the barrel upside down . Clamp a Weaver flat base to them. I dont recall the Weaver # but I use one for a shotgun . You will need to file 2 slots in the bottom of the base to clear the dovetail clamping bolts . Now another set of rings or a BSA type dot sight on top and you are done.
BSA dot is around $30 at WalMart in Michigan .
If you have the light barrel toy will need to dril and tap the recever for a Weaver base . Just check the bases till you find one that matches thre radius of your reciver .
Hope this helps Dave

Thanks for the replys. I have the 6 6/8" GVMT bull barrel, so the ring trick should work. The holo sight looks interesting, but I would want to see the difference before putting out that much money. I have seen quite a few BSA sights around, I was wondering about the quality for that price.

my suggestion would be to get one of the UltraDot series. I have the MatchDot, and it's simply haed and shoulders above any other red dot I've looked thru. The dot is crisp and sharp...... (and round)

Which Dot for the $$

I have a 4 dot Ultradot and really like it. Plan on having it for years.

As you have already mentioned, you question the super cheap price of the BSA. Those and the ATN (another tactical nightmare) will probably leave you way less than satisfied. I do not know of any underpriced, over achiever dots out there. Getting what you pay for is the bottom line - ain't no free lunches out there. If you aren't in any hurry, just watch the boards and maybe E-bay as someone occasionally puts a "Buy it now" price on something that is really attractivel. Just turned 60 and boy is the dot nice after shooting irons in BE lo these many years. I use the 12 min for sustained and the 8 min for slow. Just trying to keep my head from trying to cherry pick when running T/R Fire. Hope you run up on a good deal.

I've had it with the cheap red dots...

That said, I keep one around for a spare. Last spare was a Simmons large. Now I've horse traded to have an extra True Dot if I ever need it.

I've been through two NCstars. One other Tasco. The dot is too big and they just don't last. My nephew has one of the Chinese holo's.. It sux. Keeps coming loose. Off it came for my spare Simmons.

What have I settled on? I kept my eyes open on two gun forums/sales sites. I scored an ATN Digital with 1moa dot for just near half price of new.

Quality piece. Can be seen here: http://steveandrhonda.clearwire.net/Gunstuff/MKII'sL.JPG

It looks big, but doesn't weigh any more than the tube style Red Dots.

The ultimate Red Dot for a pistol IMHO? Doctor.

Case of the Ugly's, You must be refering to the ATN. I won't dissagree:argue:

There's nothing I've seen that compares to the glass quality or the 'm i n u t e' 1moa dot. I can't us the dim 1moa anywhere but indoors on slow fire. -and thats without bright lighting. The 2moa is great for slow fire, and I use one brightness setting higher for Timed/Rapid. Ugly or not, it is very well balanced.

As for the screws coming loose- Yes, the pivot screw for those cheap halo's is too short and doesn't bottom out in it's aluminum/pot metal base. We tried locktight red and blue without success. I've also seen one where the screws that hold the battery/on switch housing actually pull from the frame below. All from the recoil of a Ruger MKII. Same thing happened to me with an NCstar. Those cheap ones aren't built rugged enough to last.

Of the cheap ones, the BSA and Simmons 30mm tube seem to have lasted the longest from what I've seen at our club. -I'll leave honorable mention for the Tasco Pro Point. I know one guy that has three on three different pistols since they became available. Never had a problem with any of them. These are the earlier 1" models.

Red Dot Scopes

:bthumb: I have tried quite a few different scopes and found that you have less problems with the well known ones. I shoot .22 bullseye competition with a Pardini with a Aimpoint Comp that is just great. I also have two Eotechs on my AR and a HK MP5 PDW rifle. I have had good luck in the past with the Tasco PD-3 in 30 MM also. A lot of our pistol shooters also like the Ultra Dot with the different size dot settings. I tried a few cheaper ones on some of my other pistols, but always seem to have a problem one way or another. Biggest problem was that they always did not hold the settings, or the dot would shift during firing, causing you to have to re-sight it.

Hope that helps.....................:harry: :Blasting_

Hi! I am new on this board, but have been shooting for decades and am active on other boards.

Dad and I shoot falling plate matches and I just recently switched to a red dot scope also- dad has used them for years.
I have a couple of MkIIs, both with 5.5" bull barrels- one stainless and the other blued.
I have Leupold/Gilmores on one and on my SA .45acp and an older Tasco on the blued MkII.
The Leupold/Gilmores are very good for action shooting, although the dot may be too large when I start bullseye later this spring.
I am about to order a C-More for dad from Midway. It looks like a fast sight. Another member of our club shoots them and really likes them better than a red dot tube type scope.
If you get a chance go to a few matches and ask to look at some different red dots. Most shooters will be happy to show why their choice is best- trust me!
