I just recently started day hunting raccoons by calling them with a friend. I plan for the time being to use my 17hm2. But I’m considering upgrading to a more powerful 17hmr for this. I’d like to see what 17hmr’s you all are using and hear any recommendations. I’d prefer it be a threaded model for my suppressor.

Bought a $250 Savage .17 this summer with the black "plastic" stock and accutrigger. The action is a bit rough (but it is getting a lot better the more I shoot it), the stock is nothing impressive, but it was treaded for the Can and it will SHOOT. I wanted it for hunting so didnt really care about much except for it being treaded and a good shooter and it is both.
For the price, I could not be happier.

I use a Savage 93. .17 with a 22”barrel. Super accurate but I don’t like the carry the long barrel when hunting. I keep the gun on my back, I added an extra strap that goes cross shoulder. When hunting raccoons it can get thick in areas and that longer barrel on my back catches on a ton of stuff.

If you can afford it go with a 17 Tikka. I just picked one up after wanting one for years. I haven't shot it yet but there's no doubt in my mind that it will shoot well. I have four other tikkas including a 22lr and they all shoot very well.

I know there's alot of Savage fans here. I have a B17FVSE and my wife and kids have three 93R17s heavy barrels that all shoot pretty well. I did have two B17Fs and a B17FV Savage took back and destroyed as defective. I've had similar problems with Ruger American rifles. Some shoot good, some shoot ok and some shoot poor.

I've given up on the crap shoot and cough up a little more scratch for rifles with more consistent performance. Tikkas and for centerfire rifle Howas have never let me down. I've never tried a Howa rimfire so I won't vouch for those.

Also Savage and Ruger are probably the reason for the "Tupperware" synthetic stock reputation. Those companies use a very soft flexible rubbery plastic. I'm a big fan of synthetic stocks for hunting rifles. All my Tikkas and Howas still sit in their factory synthetic stocks. So I'm not a stock snob. It's just the Ruger and Savage plastic stocks are that terrible. If you do buy a Savage the Laminate versions are good.
