Proof Mark CIP over N replaces German Eagle over N

Anschutz and other manufactures across Germany will have replaced the "Eagle over N" Proof with "CIP over N". This change should have taken place during 2014 production.

I do not know if CIP over N will be used with all of the other European manufactures? If it is then this means the CIP over N symbol will not be exclusive to Germany as the Eagle over N had been in the past.

I have read those who guess this replacement may be due to the C.I.P. standardizing proof marks across Europe meaning other countries may also use the CIP over N proof?

My guess is this change to CIP over N could be due to CNC Engraving and the "possible" elimination of Roll Marking any future proof marks. Also the simpler CIP/N may take less engraving time and/or not require machine tool change out that the small winged "Eagle" symbol may need?

The firearm industry is a good example of this because the ATF actually mandates that gun manufacturers maintain a particular depth of engraving for serial numbers. Neither laser engraving or roll marking deliver the quality and accuracy required.

Note: Datron is a German Company.

If you look at your Anschutz and it is of a year where I believe engraving of the serial number had taken place you should see the crisp Serial number digits and the crisp DE country code (depends on year). You can also see that some roll marking (on the barrel) in combination with what I believe to be engraving (on the receiver) has taken place.

I do not know the exact year where roll marking SN's and where I believe the change over to engraving SN's took place.

Since 2014 the "Federal Eagle" as proof test stamp is replaced by the letters "CIP".
(Note: Anschutz may have better stated this as....."CIP" over the letter "N".)

Anschutz had recently (about one week) added a new download to their web site showing the CIP over N proof mark replacing the Eagle over N during 2014 production. This is on the same page as the above "Quote" (see link).

Thank you Andy,

I see from your link "October" of 2014 for its inception.

Unification....................Standardization.

Seems to be character lost having lost all of the countries various marks, albeit retaining the Proof House Mark.

Yet I still wonder if it might have roots in its difficulty to engrave? Why not retain diversity of the different countries marks?

After all, all that was needed for verification of the old "individual country mark" was basically retained in the memory of those who worked with it everyday.

Most all gun owners do not even know what those proof marks mean on our rifles INCLUDING the new standardized CIP over N.

I hope to be able to see the head of the proof house in Eckernförde still this year and want to have his opinion on this. They will most likely still use stamps and not engravings on brought - in firearms, or demilled firearms. SIG Sauer, who is in the same building might also have a special deal with them that the stamp can be engraved.

That would be interesting to find out.
