Norinco JW15 (13"Barrel) Hiker review with lot's of pics

Hi Everybody.
I just finished a review in Canadiangunnutz, and thought I'd move it here too. Although this particular model isn't available in the states(13"barrel). I think that some of this holds true for the longer JW15's you guys get.
Also someone out there could build a legal SBR for not much money with a JW15 as a platform

So I just picked mine up from Moreguns supply here in Winnipeg.

I'm going to post a few pics with some of my initial opinions to try and help people out with their decision to get one or not as they are selling like hotcakes.

Firstly heres the little puppy

A little bit of Engrish

It's really cute!
And handy.
And covered in cosmoline!!!!

I took it apart and cleaned the cosmoline out as best I could
Image

After a wash in Isopropyl, orange cleaner and some Ed's red, it was finally ready to put against my cheek.
And this is what I witnessed next.
Image

Pretty nice simple sights. The front blade is plenty thin enough to use, but could let a little more light in on both sides. I'll see how they do tomorrow.

All in all I think this baby is begging for a nice 3/8" rail mounted peep sight.(anyone know where I can find a williams 5d-gr?)

But I sure like the hooded front blade, the hoods got a hole on top to let in light. that sits on a nice rounded crown in the bare, hardly target grade, but then again this is not a bench gun. I think I'll blue the muzzle so it looks a little less sketchy.

Image

The finish on the gun is a nice deep blue, and the machining is quite smooth, with very few tracks.

Image

The safety is a little stiff, and being used to savages I had to look up how to use it in the manual. All in all I think it's way classier being on the bolt, but not quite as quick shooting left-hand. (Which is how I shoot!)

The trigger breaks nice clean and light!!!
That's right everybody. Nice trigger.

The Magazine is a nice little flush mounted 5 shot, unlike the 10 shot they said it would come with!!

Luckily I much prefer it to 10 shot ones, but I might go grab a 10shot CZ mag. at Cabela's for plinking to compliment the short one for hunting/hiking.(p.s CZ 10shots are 40$ at cabela's BLAH)

The follower is steel, which is pretty cool in these days of plastic.

Image

It is a little shorter than my M6 (when it's unfolded)30.5"vs32" and a little lighter too(M6 .22lr weighs 4.5lbs) this one feels closer to 4 (no scale). Maybe a touch heavier than a papoose but I sold mine so who knows.
But in terms of survival use, the M6 is probably more versatile as it can use .410 slugs (survival big game) and my favorite (WW 5 pellet 000buck for when things go bump in the night). But the JW15 is definitely a contender. We will see how they stack up against each other tomorrow. It sure is a lot more comfortable to use than the weird Springfield M6.

Anyway, more Pics (gun with scope and sling)
Image

The scope was really too big for the gun, in fact the bolt handle would hit the rear of the scope, and it took off a little blueing on the bolt, and marred the scope some. Also I could only mount the scope far enough forward till it hit the rear sight blade.
Not to mention the safety being really awkward for a left hander like me to manipulate with the scope on. Not to bad without the scope though.

. More comparisons to the M6. A gravel pit report. And what my girlfriend thinks. Coming soon!

Alright I had a pretty good time at the gravel pit's yesterday with my girlfriend and this little sweetheart of a .22.

I probably put a few hundred rounds through it. Mostly Federal Bulk pack as it's the cheapest around here and pretty good ammo.
The sights were well oriented horizontally but took a little fiddling with the elevation slider to get it dead on at 25yds. This is my third group of the day with irons and Federal Bulk pack.
Image

With Iron sights I was able to generally get 4 shots in an inch, but usually had a flier.
I attribute this to a field rest that was somewhat expedient (a big rock) and the sights being somewhat difficult, the front blade taking up too much of the tiny rear notch. Also it was a bit windy so I often got a bit of horizontal stringing. Partially from the sights, and partially from the target swaying a bit.

Heres a pic of the rest. Basically a big rock with a sand bag.
Image

Anyway my girlfriend loved the gun, and was getting groups around 2" with the irons. Once we put on the scope however it was a different story.
This gun can shoot! And so can she.
Image

Although I must say it transformed a tiny little handy sub-carbine into a compact little target rifle both in terms of accuracy and in terms of ungainliness. Mind you I did put on a big Bushnell 3-9x32 Adjustable objective. It took me literally 5 shots to mount the scope and zeroe it, by boresighting it visually, by looking through the barrel, and adjusting the scope to correspond to it. Who needs a boresighter!
Heres Annes first group with Winchester 333 Bulk pack HPs and the scope.
Image

With the scope on this thing was really easy to shoot well. The combination of clear sight picture and light trigger led to us getting sub 1" groups more often then not. Even with bulk pack. Once again I was plagued by getting a flier most of the time which is probably due to sub-par shooting conditions and me just sucking and drinking coffee. But discounting that 5th shot, most groups were around 2/3-3/4 of an inch at 25yds. With some notable ammo exceptions.
Also I shot only one group with most ammo as It was getting late in the day and my girlfriend wanted to check out one of those picked clean smalltown secondhand stores with no good results.
Next time I shoot this it will be from a good rest in calm conditions, and I'll try a few groups with each ammo.

Image

I didn't get a chance to shoot all this ammo maybe next time.
Image

Heres a representitive Federal Bulk-pack group of about an 1-1/4" Once again with a bit of horizontal action. (windy target I think) the big hole is from a muzzleloader.
Image

And another bulk pack
Image

And this is what velocitors did.
Image

And CCI subsonics
Image

And Remington Cbees
Image

And Yellowjackets
Image

And the thing just hated Stingers, I had to laugh my *** off while shooting this group.

Image

This gun sure doesn't like the Hyper-velocity shells.

By and large this thing can shoot with a scope. I think with the right target ammo in good conditions into 1/2" at 25yds.
Personally the first thing I did when I got home was take the scope off. I'm going to thin out the front blade and try to find that peep sight, I love this gun for how handy it is, no point in ruining that with a scope.

Image

OK and Noise. It is louder than a regular .22. I'd say that regular shells sound like stingers, and stingers sound like .22magnums. Subsonics are not too bad too shoot without earbuds, and CBees while far from silent like they are in a 24" are quite pleasant to shoot.
I don't think I'd be poaching the rabbits out of my neighbours back yard, like I have with a long barreled 26" Savage with subsonics, but don't worry about wrecking your hearing popping a couple of grouse in the woods.

The action is tight but smooth, really well put together, I did find that it jammed a couple of times with the Winchester 333 and CCI subsonics. Their nose is just too big a flat HP and the hung up on the edge of the chamber and had to be babied in. Too bad because I think they're the best of the lot for potential accuracy.
I'm going to try some CCI standard velocity next time though. It's pretty good ammo, quiet and inexpensive.

P.S I'm still busy editing and adding to this post, my uploading pics is going slow

Hmm, don't take this the wrong way, but those groupings aren't exactly impressive for 25 yards with a scope.

Any bolt action 22 at that distance should really put those all into one ragged hole, in my opinion. But coffee can always affect things too :)
Too true, But the main thing was a crappy shooting position and the target, a cardboard fridge box was swaying in the wind, and we kept having to go over and prop it up with stuff. I think in an indoor range with a bench 1/2inch groups would be no problem.

 Either in my 'Old/age', I missed it,.. or you didn't state how long that barrel is!??? Looks kinda short [legal?]! Does Canada have a 'different' minumun length limit on barrels??

#6 ·
Yep, 4.25". Anything less is prohibited.
Because this is a .22, the short barrel makes no difference to it's status being the same as any other Hunting rifle or .22.

As for the buttstock

Yes but I wouldn't want to keep taking it off, might strip the darned screwholes as it just screws into plastic

Nice write up. I have a wood stocked (U.S. length barrel) in my safe and another on the way. Both were under $125 delivered.

Can you take off the butt pad and store stuff in the stock? Would be a great place for a spare fire starter, 50rd box of ammo, small signal miror, fishing kit, snares, etc.

Throw a sling on there an call it done.

I'd definitely try it if someone want's to send me one.

Looks like I might have to take it down a bit but this is a pretty good tutorial.

Also does anyone have any experience with the Williams 3/8" reciever sights?
I'm not sure if I should get the high or the low model.

Also I've been searching high and low for one and can't find any.
