If you're not shooting statistically significant groups you'll never know if you're actually lying or not

 

There has been a a discussion on the "5th shot flyer". During our Wednesday rimfire sessions there is a common admonition when we know #4 is in the group. Someone will invariably call out "Don't
mess up" or some such expletive and now all scopes are on the poor guy's target.
The fifth shot flyer is definitely a phenom. BT,DT.

 

It's not a phenomena, it's a legitimate part of a small dataset

 

"Operator error" hehehe, all I see there is typical .22LR dispersion at 100y. These things aren't laser beams.

Really….10 yards, because I was actually there to play with my pistols, and just grabbed the rifle as an afterthought. Too much trouble to set up further back.

I was zeroing the scope, shot 1 low, dialed up and right, put 3 in a hole, decided to just shoot a group…and it never opened up, so I put 4 5 round mags into it.

Got so hot, I just finished up my day by function testing my Kadet 2, fast fire, 3 types of ammo. 100% reliable so far!

I’ll have to go out earlier in the day, finish zeroing, and stretch out the range on the rifle. It’s a “build” using my 457 Scout action, a 16” sporter stainless threaded barrel, and a synthetic large barrel channel stock. Topped by my old standby, the BSA Sweet 22. Hoping it will shoot hunting accurate, it’s not a target gun.

 

On my own I've always shot 5 shot groups, as if sighting in. In the military three shots to a group was acceptable for sight in. I found that ten shots per group just make the hole bigger.

 

Ime the crosshairs in a 3-9 scope is it subtends too much target center; ie, I cant shoot smaller than what the 'hairs cover.
My groups, and 1 shot precision hits, got better when I went to a different scope with fine target 'hairs.

A buddy I shoot with keeps asking me why I continually shoot off the range junk rests instead of investing in my own. His point was exactly what you are saying. How can you aim small off that crap? 😂

Edit to add. He was referring to me shooting my Mossbergs with no bipod. That rear bag I used with the CZ I taped up to hold contents. 😂

 

Picked this up when shooting very expensive handloads. When testing. Rather than shoot one large group, with ten rounds or more, I shoot multiple 3 shot groups. I shoot at least seven of those groups for each test load. If there is a major significant difference in the largest and smallest group, I keep the middle five. If the largest group is easily within the standard, then I keep it and the same with the smallest group.

Ammo is expensive and darned hard to get at times. Why waste it shooting multiple ten shot groups.

Yessir, the 'hairs do cover the center.

 

Ime just a decent set of cheap bags will do as well as expensive ones, or even my front mech rest and fancy rear Protector rabbit ear, IF set up properly. You just cant adjust the bags as easily/quickly.

 

I have no problems with effective and inexpensive. My preferred method! Most of the time I just shoot off my range bag, but try the range stuff from time to time. Mostly after repairing or tightening things up. 😂

I like the Protektor rear bag. The bunny ear piece has been on a list of things to consider.

 

imo not horrible groups @50 with that setup , that gun, will outshoot that scope! especially at yardage beyond 50,and i gererally keep my groups to 5shots,easier to measure! theres a whole lot of paper there to add little dots!!!

 

Does it have the stock trigger in it?
Even just a spring change made a big difference in my 455.
I have since put in a Timney trigger and it is much better.
I also had a BDC Nikon on it and liked it too, but changed it out for a target scope.

 

Fix is to aslign the crosshairs with the target's "+" or the points of the diamond if that's wha you are shooting and not te center,or aslign the scope so poi is off to one side of your siming point. I've also had success when shooting my "scout" mauser by using a red target so the black crosshairs would stand out

 

I used an old cloth bank bag filled with creek sand for years. I made the mistake of shooting a 460 S&W Mag off of it and the recoil tore a large hole in it and all of the sand fell out.

 

I have found it best, when i nail some ridiculously hard shot with my first shot, to put the gun down and walk away it was no big deal.

 

Somehow, I always manage to throw a shot (or 2) whenever I shoot a larger group. It takes a bit more concentration to hold things together perfectly for a 10 shot group.

 

I've shot a lot of 5 shot groups that made me happy, but 10 shot groups really tell the rest of the story. Not many of them look as good as the 5 shot groups, but those that do I hang on the wall in my gun room.
