It came in today. I made a quick trip to the pasture after cleaning and lubricating. I exercised and oiled the rear sight adjustments so I wouldn’t have any issues making adjustments.

I was impressed. First 10 rounds were fired at stuff on my dirt pile. About 5 rounds thru I fired double action (no staging) at a small bottle cap at 10-12 yards and disintegrated it. A good sign. Then I fired 20 rounds at a paper target offhand at 15 yards. There first 10 shots were fine for elevation but slightly to the right. Made a windage adjustment and the shoots landed where I wanted.

I then proceeded to shoot my favorite targets at 15 yards, fired shotshells and small white plastic pill bottles. Like I said earlier, I was impressed. I believe it’ll shoot with my Ruger Mark lV Hunter.
Photos to follow. Hasn’t uploaded to iPad.

Looks like a winner. You are going to get a lot of good shooting with it. I shoot mine much more than my Mark IV or even my Black Mamba. I shoot Steel Challenge with it against the autos and it's fun to beat them.

New rules for Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA), revolvers are going to be their own division. Iron Sight and Open Sight. Hope you can find a club near you and enjoy shooting at ssteel targeets.

Sweet gun. Enjoy!

Some years ago, I shot the East Coast Rimfire Steel Challenge. There was major sanctioned match with a big turnout, and it was a 2-day affair with handguns on day 1 and rifles on day 2. I was the only revolver shooter, and used my 4" 617 on day 1, and was in first place after the first day* - in no small part because I was gifted some time by those shooting their semi-auto jam-o-matics (i.e., everyone else ;)).

As far as speedloaders for the 617, they seem quite popular, but I've never felt the need or benefit. I guess it comes down to whether you want to spend your time filling speedloaders at home, or cylinders at the range.

* day 2? ehh...let's just say I peaked by the end of day 1 o_O

I’m taking a break from trying to wear out the 617. Setting in the shade. Shooting spinner targets at 20 and 25 yards. Just repainted the spinners.

I’ve checked into the Speed-Beez loafers and bundles. In my case, I don’t see a need as of now. If I always shot near a bench or had to pay to shoot, I would definitely have one.

I had an urge a few years ago and bought a 4 inch 617 for a back up to my 6 inch. I hadn't done anything to the 4 inch except new springs and got the trigger pull down to 8.5 pounds on my Lyman Digital Scale.

The major feature of the 4 inch is that it is much lighter and allows me to shoot longer throughout the day. I ordered a new Apex Tactical Mass Drive Hammer Kit for it last night and it's scheduled to be here Wednesday. They always give great, fast service.

All I want to do is match the 7 pound trigger pull that I have on my 6 inch. I'll be happy and will leave the gun the way it is except I'm going to put an optic on it. It will probably be another C-More Railway with 12 MOA dot. I have three of them now and I like it. Any suggestions on a better red dot?

I was going to order some DS-10 loaders but didn't like the long knob on them.
I don't do competition, just wanted easier loading without having to put each round in the chamber individually.
If I want to take some spare ammo in a loader on a hike, I don't want it to be 3 1/2" long.

I have a Speedbeez, it works fine. The Pelican style box with a secure lid for the block is nice, You can load it up at home and not worry about rounds falling out,

Speedbeez makes a basic economy plastic loaderlike the one I have, and they also make a nicer one with an anodized Aluminum knob, but both still have the plastic body.

I then ordered an Ansac. These are near $60 each but made to last.
All Aluminum and stainless steel.
The Ansac should still be going strong when the plastic loaders have worn out.

The Ansac didn't seem right when I tried loading it the first time using the Speedbeez block. Rounds were locked in but splayed outwards.
I contacted the owner, who right off asked me if I was using his block or another brand.
Seems the Speedbeez block is a bit more sloppy with the hole spacing.
Dave, the Ansac owner, sent me a 50 round block and a 120 round block free of charge, and when using them the rounds load as they should.

The Speed Beez boxes are a great help. I have two 100 round boxes that also hold one speed loader. They really help keep the rounds secure. I have 10 of the older DS-`0s and 10 on the newer spring activated once. I also have 2 of the older Protector style boxes that hold 140 rounds each so, when it's time to shoot a Steel Challenge I'm well prepared. I like the older style reloaders because they fit in my pocket. The newer once are taller but fire the cases into the cylinder better.

617 with original DS-10 loaders.

This is about 15 years old and I was shooting a Mirage red dot sight.

I spent the morning working on my 617 four inch, by installing a RevUp hammer kit and an Apex Tactical Mass Drive hammer kit.

I am getting too old to be doing modifications to my guns. I lost the firing pin rebound spring in the Mass Drive kit. I also ordered the wrong kit. I ordered an N frame kit instead of L frame so it's going back for a refund and I'll buy the correct kit. Apex volunteered to install it for me and I'm going to take them up on it. Randy is a top gunsmith and has done incredible work for me in the past.

I've got over 70k rounds through my bone-stock 617, and have shot it almost exclusively in double action. The action's not particularly light or smooth, but with that kind of round count, I've kinda acclimated to it and do ok. Still, I'm very tempted to swap in one of those hammer/spring kits - and since I've been shooting RFC's handgun match, I'm not above buying a few extra points ;) . I read your review on the BE forum, and I'm leaning towards the RevUp hammer kit. Unfortunately, it looks to be out of stock, so it looks like I'll have to wait a bit.
