I had a Norway maple cut down last year about 20' from our deck. Most of the stump was ground away except by a fence along the neighbors the driveway. So now that it's been warm we've been getting a rotten milk stench every once and awhile wafting on the deck.. So today I washed the deck and looked under it and still got the stink. Well it's the stump. Anything I can put on it? I do have a dog that goes in the yard but not by the stump.

You can always burn the stump. Use a 1" wood boring drill bit at least 5 inches long and drill holes across the top of the stump. soak the stump with kerosene for several days till it is well soaked. Stack kindling and or charcoal on top and light it up. You may need to do this more than once depending on the size of the stump.

It might be due to fermenting sugars from the sap. It may have sap still running in it if you cut it in the fall and it went dormant soon after. It takes a stump a while to die after the tree is cut. The sap may have started to run after it came out of dormancy. If that is the case, the stump and remaining roots should die soon on it's own as long as you kill all sprouts that come up. Then the odor will be gone.
