Mossberg Model 43 Target

I seem to have been drawn into the old .22 trap and have been buying a few lately. I just bought a Model 43 online and now I suppose I should learn something about the rifle. I have never owned a Mossberg and haven't even shot one since the 50's when I was in junior rifle club.

How did this rifle compare to the competitors of that era, such as the Winchester 75? The real attraction was that is it supposed to have an adjustable (externally) trigger which I consider a real plus. The rifle has only had one owner and has been fired <1000 rounds over it's life. It comes with an original Mossey side scope mount and an older Weaver K4.

Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Dale:)

Hi Dale,

I've heard some hearsay about the Model 43, and I own one, but I won't stretch it farther than that.

I've been told that there were only about 2900 of these rifles produced, but I don't know why. I do know that mine is a good shooter. It's not gonna compete with the benchrest guns, but I don't have much trouble shooting 1" groups at 50 yards with it. Hang on the that scope mount ! If you should be looking for a Mossberg scope that fits it, PM me.

I doubt that the Mod 43 would compete with the Win 75, or the 52, but I can't say for sure, 'cause I just don't know.

Hi Stacy,

Thanks, I'm sorta fond of the older Mossbergs. The '43 has a 4 position plate under the forearm, each position being about 1" apart. The swivels are Mossbergs' quick disconnect type, both front and rear.

Jay,
Thanks for the input and the photo's are terrific. It is supposed to come with a period Weaver K4 so it appears at the present I am not in need of the scope.
What kind of groups have you experienced when using standard velocity ammo? It appears to have a barrel band, have you experimented with that feature at all?
Thanks again,
Dale

Hi Dale,

As I said above, if I can do my part, the 43 will shoot 1" groups at 50 yards with the peeps. If my eyes exhibit an attitude, then the groups are gonna be larger. It shoots about the same with Wolf MT, SK Match, and doesn't do bad with the bulk stuff either. Noooo, I didn't say bench gun, but you shouldn't have any problem squirrel huntin' with it, and you won't be embarrassed at the range, against a comparable rifle.
