A fellow enthusiast put a list of serial numbers to help determine the year your Model 41 was built. The list was of the Pre-fix However the list went from TBL to TFJ and does not show TEF which is the pre-fix on mine.
Can anyone tell me what year the pre-fix TEF was made~? I'm very confused

The serial number list is from the stickies at the top of this forum and and TEF is between TBL and TJF hence 1988-1989.

Hope that helps,

The data is inexact. All we know for sure is that a certain prefix started in a given year. There can easily be overlap into the following year.

If you want to know an exact "born date" requesting it from the manufacturer is you best bet. Some offer that info for free, some charge for it, and some don't offer it at all.

I don't know how S&W handles those requests.

For Smith & Wesson serial number letters

Smith & Wesson Firearm History Request

Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation

Can you tell me about the history of my gun?
The Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation has two products that we offer for people interested in learning more about their firearm. We encourage you to visit the Letter Process page to learn more about these letters.

In most cases, Smith & Wesson will only have documentation for where the gun was shipped to from the factory—which is normally a wholesaler or distributor. Guns are sometimes returned to the factory for service, and there’s a possibility that we may have access to this documentation.
