MK I Prices

I see several vendors on Gunbroker as well as Guns International with asking prices on the MK I's in the $500 to $1000 range depending on the condition & whether or not the original box is included. Am I missing something here...are these guys just wishful thinking or have the prices on the MK I models jumped up that much ?

Just over a year ago I picked up a factory fired only MKI 6 7/8" heavy tapered barrel Target model. I gave $375.00 for it the box was 99% and all papers, manual and original oil paper. Looking at new MKIV's I couldn't come close to it's equal for no way close to that price not to mention it's beauty. So I felt I got the deal of the century but then again when I get a new gun I'm more interested in a shooter than a seller.

REP,

Your 1981 MkI T-678 is close to the end of the MkI Target era and well worth the value you obtained it for...looks great, Congrats!! :bthumb:

My T-678 (1978) also came in excellent condition and was a great value (considering no papers, box or OM). However, I already had invested in a MkIV Hunter 40160 (highest MkIV $$$)...but I do really like it. Both my MkI & MkIV have 6 7/8"barrels, with equally great accuracy. But as you state, to get the MkIV where it's at, spent 5X my MkI purchase!?!

Now, if you tried to get an early (1951-1953) MkI T-678 (especially the 1st years Target Red Eagle), with original period Box and Owners Manual (all in great condition), then be ready to spend at least 5X what you invested in your 1981 MkI!! :t

FWIW, I watched an auction last week that ended up with 31 bids. Up for sale was a 1949 Ruger Pistol "Red Eagle Type I", SN-0343 and in really nice condition! There was No Box and No Owners Manual, or any paperwork offered. But bidding was aggressive and in the end, the winning bid was $2635 for a 71 year-old Standard!!! Of course, this unit represents Rimfire History and as many gun collectors know, originality and rarity drives for very high prices!! ;)

JS,

You are correct. There are rimfire auctions whose starting bids are just absurd. But then again, there are some gems I wanted and have won for a fraction of their market values! :D

To me overall, I have observed it the other way around on GB. Nice "common" Rugers that start off with a high asking price seem to get no bids before their auction ends. However, nice "Rare" Rugers that start off with lower expected asking prices attract those who understand their values in the market place. Of course what I, or collectors, are "willing to pay" can quickly supersede what most bidders are comfortable with! To each his/her own!! :t

Yep! Saw a Standard on GB that was scribed on the upper and 2 places on the lower with the owner's name. What was bad, they were asking what I considered a "normal used price" compared to other non-scribed standards?!?

That's like inscribing several areas of your auto's Paint Job with your personal information and expecting to sell it for KBB values???

I have a '72 Mark I target a guy wanted to buy I used some auction sites and priced it at $450 ($350 + $100 for with 5 mags (all OEM, 1 original, 4 brand new)).. he countered at $200 and Im thinking the mags are worth $100 by themselves so I passed..

Now I see that I was way over priced.. Would the extra mags add $$ to a reasonable asking price?

TGBM,

Hello and Welcome to the RFC! :Welcome:

Yes...extra mags should add more value, but maybe just $10-$15 for each extra mag!

* Is your MkI Target a 5 1/2" Bull Barrel or 6 7/8" Heavy Taper Barrel?
* What is the blued finish condition?
* All OEM Action or does it have some AM drop-in parts?
* Are the grips the wood, wood w\thumbrest or just the standard black plastic?
* Any signs of rust, scratches or wear marks?

Overall condition and features could vary final asking price by $100 to $300!

If the magazines are the original nine-shot versions with the chrome plated long base that is attached to the magazine body, the magazines are worth considerably more than $10 each. The subject magazine is the one in the middle of the below picture and often sell for $50 when encountered.

If I were local, I would have happily paid your asking price as those magazines are getting scarce. I have a few spares but could use more.

If your magazines have the follower slot only on the right side, those magazines are worth more then $15 each. I have paid $50 each for those.

It will be said that the later magazines will fit and function. That is true, but they tend to have the magazine catch capture at the junction between magazine body and magazine base. That makes ejecting the magazine a pain. The mag catch can be altered or replaced with an aftermarket catch with a larger radius that does not grab at the interface of the magazine body and floor plate. Or you can use the original magazines. I prefer the latter.

About 6-7 years ago, I passed on a MKI pistol and have regretted it ever since. Although it was not marked as such, I am positive that it was a Clark Custom. It was a 6 inch Bull barrel with target sights, Clark trigger, and had the sweetest trigger pull ever, and had a highly polished royal blue finish. Can't remember for sure, but think the asking price was around $600.

Need help with this Mark 1

I've been asked to help a family sell their inherited firearms. This is a Mark 1 target with a set of thumb grip panels and a compensator. The finish is in fairly rough shape as it was stores for years in a leather holster. Lots of wear marks and a bit of rust under the grips. The gun itself functions fine. It comes with three of the chrome base magazines. Any idea what this model is worth?

Ruger serial number look up did not identify this one which is 1580XX. I'm guessing early '70s.

Ripley,

This is a 1958 (see Here) MkI Target T678 with a Ruger Comp! Viewing the pics, overall bluing appears in good shape (90-95%) and although the grips are not Ruger, they look to be very functional!

IMHO, I'd estimate a "fair offer" for just the T678 in this condition around $300-$350! However with an interested buyer, the compensator (+$50) and 2 extra mags (+$75) could add to that fair T678 final value!! :bthumb:

Hope this helps...

Ted
