March RFC CZ 100/200 Yard Challenge

Ok, March is here, time for a couple of bring-backs.
At 100 yards we'll be shooting two 5 shot groups.
Group size is measured center to center at it's widest point.
And for the kicker, a penalty for being outside the center ring.
Measuring from the furthest edge of the bullet hole furthest from the center of the bull
to the outer edge of the heavy ring, that dimension penalty gets added to the group size.
Smallest 2 group aggregate total wins. You have to Keep It Centered, Keep It Tight.

At 200 yards the CAT200 will be used, shooting 10 shots at the bull for score.
This is so those of us with "less than quality" ammunition can compete with the lot tested stuff.

March 2018 100/200-Yard Benchrest Challenge

Guidelines:

Notice: : These guidelines are for March's 2018 100/200-Yard .17/.22 Rimfire Benchrest Challenge.
Hopefully it is pretty self-explanatory, but if you have any questions, please PM me for clarification or post your question in the thread.

The classes will be divided into three (3) groups. Factory Sporter, Modified and Honorary.
Only CZ or BRNO rifles are allowed in the Factory Sporter and Modified classes.
Any rifle capable of chambering a .17 or .22 caliber rimfire round is permitted in the Honorary class.

Factory Sporter: Rifles can include trigger modifications (including aftermarket trigger replacement,)
bolt work, striker mods, etc., but it must use a factory CZ barrel.
No tuners are allowed, even with factory barrels. Stocks must be factory OEM.
No limitations will be included on optics. Use whichever power scope you wish.

Modified: Will include any rifle which hosts a 3rd party barrel, (Lilja, Benchmark, Shilen, etc.) and/or non-OEM stock. Again, no limitation on optics.

Honorary: Though he is not a CZ shooter, this class was begun due to the inspiration of Smoothtrigger and his desire to participate in our Challenges.
This class will include any non-CZ/BRNO rifle of .17 or .22 rimfire caliber and will also include any action capable of chambering either round. Again, no limitation on optics.

Posted Targets: During the Spring, Summer and Fall months, consider this to be from March through November, inclusive,
all submitted targets must be shot outdoors at 100 yards. During Winter months, consider this to be from December through February, inclusive,
participants have the option to shoot indoors, but will be shooting under a Class entitled "Indoor."
The "Indoor" class will be open to any make and/or model of .17 or .22 caliber rimfire.
There will be no restriction on optics and the choice of ammunition will be left to the shooter's discretion.

100 Yard Target

KICKIT Red

Use that sighter bull to fine tune your setup.
Fire 10 shots per target for score, 5 shots at each bull
Measure the 5 shot group size, center to center
Measure the penalty dimensions
Add them together for the bullseye score
Add both bullseye totals for the target aggregate.

Those grey rings outside the heavy ring are spaced 0.05 inches apart.
Helps for calculating the penalty dimension.

When you print the target be sure to set it to print "Actual size" and 100 percent which should give you the correct target size.

Supporting The Rifle/Rests: The rifle can be supported front and rear; however no one-piece or vice-type rests are allowed.
Bipods/rear bags, mechanical rests (front and/or rear) may also be used either from the bench or prone position….shooter's choice.

Calibers can include any 17 or 22 caliber rimfire in any class.
There are no restrictions on bullet type. You may use match ammo, HV, HP or whatever it is with which you typically shoot.

Remember to include the necessary information when posting your target:

1. Shooter's RFC screen name.
2. Rifle description - Make/Model
3. Ammunition used
4. Date of target
5. Class - Sporter, Modified, Honorary

For those with any number of CZ's/BRNO's and other brands,
feel free to shoot in any class at your discretion.
Please post only your best target from each class.

Target Guidelines: 200-Yard Challenge

Fire a total of 10 shots per page...best edge scoring...nick/hit the center dot for the X.

CAT200 Red

In the event a shooter feels a mistake has been made in reference to a competitor's score or the shooter's final position among participants, an RFC Moderator will make the final determination.

Please have all targets into the thread which reads "March 2018 100-Yard Benchrest Challenge," no later then 12:00 midnight, March 30th.

When your target is submitted, it MUST have all pertinent information included such as shooter's screen name, rifle type/model, ammunition used, etc.

Quick question on the factory sporter rules. I have a 455 Varmint Evolution. I changed the stock to a Boyds Varmint Thumbhole stock. I know it's not the way it came from the factory, but some models were offered with the same stock. Am I still in factory sporter or do I need to step up to modified?

Thanks!

This is proving to be a deadly combination.

The Rifle: The Ammo: The Bipod:
Image
This is the way I shoot the rifle. I remove the cheek rest and butt hook, and then place a towel under the feet of the bipod to help it slide smoothly on our concrete benches.

With my new Lapua Test Center lot of CX, along with this rest (Borrowed from RFC member TSF), everything is performing very nicely.
Much easier to shoot off than my Bulls Bag with this rifle.
I'll be ordering this bipod as soon as they come back in stock.

Shot a sighter/warm up target, and this one target today.
Temp was 46°, and the wind was coming from my six o'clock.
Image

I could have shot a few more targets, but with the increasing wind I decided to quit while I was ahead and call it a day..
Actually to be honest, I was thinking it's time to "Get out of Dodge" and do not look back.:):)

Next up I'll mount my tuner, and wait for a bit calmer day.

Hey, that's "Smooth" with a capital "S".:)

Jala as alway, thank you for doing the measurements.
It keeps the whole program consistent. And by the way, nice call on the penalty.:)

I really feel with this combo of rifle, bipod and ammo, I can now get the maximum results out of my equipment.

This RFC contest is high on my list, but my local Rimfire match has turned into a Battle Royal!!
I need all the help I can get now that we are approaching midway in our season.

What has happened to this thread. Way down on both shooting, and viewing.

We all miss Bob for sure, but we had a whole host of characters besides our new fearless leader Jala posting and shooting all the time.
I'm missing the old crew along with the new blood.

So what's up besides the weather?

By the way, thanks Jala for keeping this going.

I can tell you that I'm not going anywhere.

I can only speak for myself, but it has nothing to do with the changeover. Jaia is doing a fine job and I for one am very happy he was willing to take the reigns, so to speak. Anyone that spends enough time on the internet to find a picture of a Blobfish and posts it here has to have some redeeming qualities, right? ;)

For me it's mostly been the sub-freezing temps. On the [very] few days we've had in Jan/Feb that were in the 40s or low 50s, we've typically had winds in the teens to 20s. With the layout of the range here in Omaha, it simply hasn't been amenable to shooting rimfire. Hopefully, things will improve in the near future.

BTW - that's some pretty fancy shootin' there Smooth - well done!

I'll be around as well, lobbing .22 bullets at 100 yds gets in your blood.

We're finishing up the last month of our indoor postal match, so that'll free up some trigger time.

On the other side of the coin, I'm coming up on the beginning of shotgun season, plus a good friend of mine has me addicted to long range center fire and precision reloading.

Canada is adopting a 26 hour day starting the first of April this year, I'm looking forward to having the extra time to spend.

Not bad, Savage. I'll get you into the standings this evening.
Spent the early morning in the canoe with the whippy stick
and a white clouser picking up a mess of sac-a-lait.
Fish fry for the clan at lunch today.

Image

The challenge is for those with no fear of failure.
Too many worry that their targets aren't competitive.
When the weather and winter illness interfere it puts a crimp in the competition.
I have no problem running the challenge. Figured out how Bob set up the thread,
all I had to do was edit a few lines to fit the next months targets.
As long as y'all keep posting targets, we'll keep the challenge going.

Miami, they may look like bluegills to those who don't see them that often,
but those are sac-a-lait, better known as crappie. A bit thicker fillet,
a bit sweeter on the tongue, especially in an egg wash based batter. :D

Bill, there are already three or four 25/50 yard contests underway.
This is a challenge for those who want to push the limits of their skills.
25 and 50 yards are fine to show the capabilities/skills of rifle and trigger operator,
but at 100 and 200 yards, dealing with wind and ammunition quirks,
it's way more entertaining than the same old same old at 50 yards or less.
There are many more targets shot and dropped in the trash, than ever show up here.
You can't claim all day long and then post a target with 4 inches of vertical spread at 100 yards.
Especially after bragging that you can shoot sub-moa at any distance, with CCI SV.

Jerry, pm coming your way

I had a bad case of the yips this morning.
CCI 17hmr 20 gr fmj at 200 yards.
Crosshairs would not stay centered.
Chronograph showed 2317 low to 2434 hi, 40 shots fired.
but I could not get comfortable and stay on target.
Left, right, up, down, I was unable to steady up.
Maybe next week.

Miamgal

Are you referring to this thread?
The one that shoots the USBR target.
http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=181
The one with just over a thousand entries and 7000+ views over a 10 year period?

You'll be happy to hear, my ranges 50yd benchrest match will be switching to the USBR target for next years contest starting in November.
I'll be happy to post my results starting then on that thread.

In the meantime, I find shooting the 100yd and even the 200yd CZ contest way more engaging.
That's not because the USBR thread isn't a challenging contest, but because hardly anyone ever posts any pictures of their targets (or anything else interesting), and I find the commentary to be a bit sterile and boring.

Now it you're referring to some other thread, or if I have mischaracterized the above one feel free to correct me.

Smooth

Oh, your'e welcome to post up targets on this thread anytime.

YA

Great smooth, look forward to your scores and apples to apples competition. Hope you can help "liven up" the entertainment factor too you seem to need. I do find the USBR .100 ten ring more challenging than a 1"+ circle at 100 yds.. Welcome!!

Jaia-we called those fish "rock bass" and have caught and eaten many in my youth long ago. Your "egg washed base batter" made my mouth water. I'd bet lots of fun on a fly rod...we used bamboo and store wrapping string.
