The receiver side walls are thicker, being polymer instead of aluminum. The inside width is the same, but outside is about 1/8"wider. Notice how on a "normal" AR the trigger and hamer pins are about flush with the outside of the receiver. On the 15-22, the pins are recessed. I doubt an ambi safety would work without some modification.

Break the gun in half, rotate the safety halfway between safe and fire.

Use a punch that fits the hole on the non thumb lever side and punch the safety out.

You should now have the safety in your hand or on the table. Look in the right side hole and observe the silver pin sticking up through the opening.

Position safety on the opposite side it started on, and while using a small something (flat bladed screwdriver) to depress the silver pin, push the safety back through at the same halfway between fire and safe angle.

Re assemble the rifle, and congrats, you now have reversed your safety!

I did this on mine, makes it easy for a lefty to shoot.

And yes, it has a mag release on both sides.

Whoa, Nelly!

Just put the punch down and back away!

The normal method of removing an AR safety (milspec, but I suspect the M&P is the same) is to loosen or remove the pistol grip. This relaxes the safety detent spring and, with the hammer cocked? I think?, the safety falls out the left side of the receiver.

It may be possible to grind the back side of the safety levers of an ambi set to install it on a M&P.

Not having had one of these apart, I can't say whether the OEM part is reversible. A Milspec one is NOT.
