Lyman tang sight, need advice

I just purchased this Lyman tang sight off Ebay. It was advertised as "Lyman tang peep sight marked WS Winchester 1890 06" The minimum bid was 169.99 so I placed a bid and was a bit surprised that there were no other bids and these are very hard to come by and I got it. I started to worry what I was going to get and am still not sure.
I am a complete novice on tang sights and didn't notice the aperture seems to be missing.
The sight is marked "LYMAN REG US PAT OFF" and on the lower part of barrel is marked
"PAT JUL 25.05 - OCT.15.07. These stampings are very small and the bottom of the base is marked "WS" also very small letters.
The sight is in excellent shape but it appears it was a flip down aperture and it is missing.
It is not threaded for a screw in aperture. If that is the case can the flip down aperture be replaced? I really don't know what my options are other than to send it back or try to find a post that is complete.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated as I really don't know what to do.

It isnt a 'target' peep sight anyway, its a nice hunting sight. Those Ive had with the flip down ap were too small for me, in trials I shot as well with the larger hole and had better luck finding my target.
What I did was sight in at 25yd with the open sights (which is still pretty close for 50yd) and would use the tang peep for more than 25 and 'more precise' shooting. That made a good combo while retaining the open sights.
Btw, the peep will 'crisp up' the open rear if you use them together.
Do you have a gun it fits?

Didn't the Ad mention the flip down piece was missing? If it did they might not take it back. I have 4 of those type of sights, but have no idea where you could find the flip down part. It might be easier to find the staff with one. Whoever knocked that little pin out to take the flip down piece out is good. Those things are hard to get out. 2 of mine don't flip down too easy and i need to take them out to loosen them up. Just been afraid i might mess something up.

It is 'crisp' up; ie, make more clear and sharply defined. It is the 'aperture effect' like with a camera.
If, when shooting with open sights, your rear sight is fuzzy, you can flip up the peep and align all three sights on target getting better sight definition.

I have decided to keep the sight, I mounted it on my 62A which is all original but in really good shape. I really wanted a vintage sight to put on it because it has never been messed with. I put new Marbles tang sights on my 1890 and 1906 expert as they both have been refinished.
Thanks to everyone for the advice and replies.

According to my Lyman chart the code "WS" is for the tang sight that fits the 1890, 1906, 62, & 62A. Actuually, the OP's sight is a 1AWS sight with the 1A designating the 3rd variation with the locking lever at the base. As an aside, the sight marked DA is made to fit the Winchester '94 lever gun and a few others but will work just fine on the 1890, 1906, and 62 series guns. Back when I was outfitting my 1890s, 62s, and '06s with tang sights the WS sights were sort of scarce but the DA sights were pretty easy to come by. So all mine sport the DA sights. They look just like the WS sights to me.

To the OP...mount the sight as is and give it a try. You may find you really don't need that flip out aperture. Of the ones I have owned, most were very stiff to flip in and out and were an aggravation in general.

Fwiw, Ive had a Lyman sight with the flip out ap, tried it a few times but it was just too small. Other than those tries it doesnt get used, even in 'target use'. I like Light!
Iirc, years back the USA tested diff aperture size with the AMU shooters and found they got better scores with a largish aperture vs a small one.

I did some research & your correct on one . That is a A1 D1 . The other one is a R10 That goes to the model 24 and I think model 241 as well!! I’ve also got the box now for the R10 model 24 tang sight. Thank you very much for your help and wisdom!! It’s highly appreciated!! Ty !! JP

Like was said earlier, you're sight is a Lyman 1A, 3rd variation with the side locking lever at the base, and a replacement stem, from a Lyman no. 2 combination tang sight can be used, with the disc., is what you're looking for. Not sure if you can get creative and drill, and tap the small eye piece for a screw in peep sight. Not even sure if I would try it either. It's pretty common for the small flip down eye piece to be broken, on the 1A sight, in all reality.
