Long-Eye-Relief "Scout" Scope on 10/22?

I'm considering a Butler Creek Packer Stock for one of my 10/22s (I want a .22 that will takedown/fold into a short package, without sacrificing much shooting performance). With the packer stock, the barrel will be removed frequently. I think a long-eye-relief "scout" style scope mounted on the barrel might be the best option for this setup (so scope/barrel alignment will be maintained).

Has anyone used a long-eye-relief scope on a 10/22? Do they make variable power scopes like this (2-6x or so would seem perfect). Any bargains in this category?

Thanks

Doug, that sounds like an interesting idea, but you have a couple of problems. First of all, what kind of barrel? It is going to have to be a bull barrel with no flutes. Anything else will be too small or the flutes could cause you problems, if they are under a proposed mount.

I am not aware of any LER scope that is suitable for a scout rifle that is variable. Any variable pistol scope has one drawback... as you change the power magnification, you change the eye relief. That doesn't work too well on a shouldered arm.

So let's say you stick with a regular scope. You could still mount a weaver rail to the barrel and keep the scope permanently attached. The issue will be finding one with sufficient eye relief. I had this problem with an AR I was building and ended up choosing a Simmons Aetec 3.5-10 I think because the eye relief was over 4".

You could actually shorten the weaver base so that you had the bare minimum length for the rings to hold the scope, BUT since you are going to be removing it I would recommend that you still use at least 4 mounting holes into the barrel to make sure you don't knock it loose.

I'm thinking the best answer would be a cantaliever sp? type mount would work. That way you could have the scope mounted to the barrel but back in the conventional location. I'm not sure if anyone offers the mount you'd need but it wouldn't be too hard to make one. I have never been a fan of the scout scope maybe cause I couldn't ever make it work for me. :D

The eye relief on that one is 8.7" to 10.67". Not a huge variation.
Heck for $45 it might be worth a try, huh?? They might even have a good return policy. If not, I am sure you could sell it here for a few bucks.

I notice too on the Bushnell they say it is FOR use on scout scopes. Maybe Bushnell have fixed that eye relief problem since I last checked. All the LER variable I use are on pistols, so it's no big deal for me to move them a few inches.

Easy, drill tap heavy barrel. (just make CERTAIN you're using a proper jig so the holes are perfectly on top of the bore, otherwise.....well...
Weaver mount, I forget the number. Rock and Roll.
I've done about four like this. Its an EXCELLENT way to take down running game.
The pic shows one I did for a guy who walks orchards for groundhogs. He can dump four or five rounds into a chuck before it goes 10 feet, even at full run.

Do you have the Weaver mount numbers? I think I would like to try this.
