Kimber 82 Government, 2 stage triggers

Hello my name is Brian and I own a Kimber 82 Government. It has a single stage trigger but I have been thinking of a 2 stage trigger. What are some suggestions if that's possible in the Kimber.?

I have seen the XTSP trigger and that looks really nice. The site calls for rifles with the Model 82G. Mine simply says Kimber 82 Government, Kimber of Oregon Inc. But I do not see anything that shows 82G stamped on the rifle.

Will this work? What other 2 stage trigger options are available for this rifle?

Thanks for your input!!

There's been several posts and threads here about the XTSP trigger. All very positive. I have not purchased one yet because I'm happy with the adjustments I've made to the factory trigger. Plus my rifle doesn't shoot as well as I hoped. I had an order in with Tom but decided to cancel because it doesn't make sense to me to add an expensive upgrade to my rifle at this time

Thanks PWNolan for getting this for me. My Kimber is a very accurate rifle and a pleasure to shoot. There are several 82's at our local match at Saginaw Field & Stream. I finished high in the group of 30 shooters and I'm chasing a guy that has an 82 and he missed 2 points last year out of 160 shots.
The factory trigger is very nice but my idea was to have a trigger that would make it easier to let the shot go of the second stage when the sights align. But I'm wondering if I'm overthinking and should stay with what is working?

I did a spring change and a little tuning with the factory trigger on mine and it's actually pretty nice. However, if I was using the gun for competition I'd want the XTSP trigger. It is a pricey upgrade but I think it's one of those things where once you use it you quickly forget about the price and you'll be glad you have it

Thanks PWNolan for your comments as they are appreciated. I like the competition of rimfire bench rest and I want to improve my standing and win the league and the new trigger I believe will help me. I have the ability to win so this will push me over the edge. An XTSP will get ordered. I really do appreciate your thoughts and they mirror mine. :)
Thanks!! Brian

Brian,
PWNolan has you headed in the right direction. That trigger will fit on your rifle. Very simple install, takes maybe 5 minutes if you've messed with stuff like this much. If this is a new experience for you, just look at the old trigger, remove the screws and install the new one. The directions that come with the trigger give very good instructions on how to adjust it.

I've had one since the beginning. Actually, the one I have is the original prototype. Got lucky enough to be asked to test it out. Tom and his guys were great to work with. It really is a thing of beauty. My gun was probably one of those that for whatever reason just shot very well out of the box. I don't see that much, if any accuracy improvements with the new trigger, but the old trigger had been reconfigured to have a pull weight of 2 oz already. Plus, I had a lot of experience with the gun before installing the XTSP. But, the new trigger is much easier to control, absolutely no creep and you can adjust it into a single stage trigger if you so desire.

As a reference point, I shot my rifle in competition, both IR 50/50 and ARA. With the factory trigger and the XTSP trigger. Did really well with the gun using either trigger. Even won a match here and there. Had a longtime BR shooter shoot the gun one day before a match and he was startled with how well the gun shot. As to how the XTSP trigger does, had two longtime smallbore position shooters use the gun and both said that the trigger was one of the best they'd used. Both agreed it was on par as far as operation and feel as their high end rifles.

To me, it's really about what do you want to do with the gun. It's not intended to be a BR rifle. Nor was it intended to be any kind of high end competition rifle. And honestly, some of these rifles probably aren't accurate enough to warrant the investment cost of the XTSP. The factory trigger, with some adjustments, can be made to do well enough for anyone. But if you want something really good, then the XTSP trigger is the way to go. I've owned and shot some nice triggers in my life ranging from the high end Anschutz triggers, Jewell triggers, along with the ultra high end Bix n Andy and FF triggers you see on competition BR rifles. This is not a FF or Bix trigger. It wasn't designed to be. But it doesn't give up anything to the Anschutz triggers IMHO. And the upper end Anschutz triggers are pretty darn good.

Good luck

Kenny

Hello kseatm!! I really do appreciate your thoughts on the quality & increased performance of the XTSP trigger. The rifle I have I believe has the potential of winning my league with help from the guy the applying pressure to the trigger. Money is not really factor if I can improve my skills (trigger time) and scores with this trigger and win my league.
Thanks!! Brian :)

Brian,
If I could figure out how to get my stupid photo account to work, I'd send you some pics of just how accurate these can be. At one time, when the idea of the XTSP trigger was in the "idea" stage, a fellow member here (willymakit) or something like that spoke to Tom Myers about building one for the 82G. The trigger platform was already in existence on other rifles, but the idea of transitioning over to the 82G held enough merit that Tom went ahead with it. I can't remember the engineer that was the conduit between my testing and final development, but he was simply awesome. I received a prototype, played with it, shot it, called and spoke to the engineer with ideas that I thought would be an enhancement, and he actually not only listened but explained the how and why certain ideas might or might not work.

At the time of testing, I was shooting at an indoor range, on IR 50 targets at 50 yards, using the best BR ammo I had available. As mentioned, I'd shot BR before with this gun, along with several other rifles. So, I wasn't any kind of expert, but didn't just fall off the turnip truck either.

It was neat testing and tweaking. I found that I could get an even lighter pull by taking out the first stage completely, tweaking the sear engagement spring and also installing another arm that Tom sent to try.

If you like two stage triggers, this is simply awesome. If you like single stage triggers for BR shooting, you can make it do that too and really enjoy it. I think of it as an Anschutz 5018 two stage match trigger without the bells and whistles. It's that good!

One thing, you can reverse the trigger shoe to have either a straight stem or the curved part touching your finger. On the bench, I liked the straight stem with a small oring on it to use as a reference point for trigger pull and control. If I'm not mistaken, you can install an aftermarket Anschutz trigger shoe if you so desire. It's been a long time since I went through all of this.

Somewhere on here is a couple of threads that I started about the trigger, my testing, results and impressions. The photos probably won't still be active, as photobucket took a crap on me not long after that. But some decent info in there if you don't mind listening to a goober like me.

Again, good luck. You'll like the trigger. Tweak it to your preference and then come back and give your impressions. I haven't been on here for quite awhile so lost track of the progress or results of these triggers.

Hello PWNolan!!
I was shooting RWS Rifle match last year and its 1 ragged hole at 50 yards. There are 2-3 others that shoot exceptionally well. I've shot Eley Match Flat nose and not as accurate as RWS. I have some R50 but not sure how it shoots. Spring project. What does your rifle like?

And yes the wind is difficult to read. I've been watching the weeds on the berm and probably should buy some orange tape. I need to buy some wind flags. If it's blowing like a SOB I don't go. :)

Thanks!! Brian

@Brian.Miller the batch of RWS Rifle Match might be exceptionally good but I wouldn't count on all of it being that way. The Eley you had could've been a batch that wasn't so good. Next batch could be much better. I'd alao try to find some Lapua Center-X and Midas + to try

A decent aet of wind flags is a must

I have shot Center X and it was an exceptional group and I have 400 left. SK Flatnose Match shot really well and i have about 400 left. The SK Flatnose match has been DC'ed.

You make a good point about Eley Match or Team and didn't perform well in my Pistol previously and now today the new Eley Match and Team fills the black and X ring. The #2 shooter in our league that I'm chasing shoots Eley Match.

I will try some Midas +. Anything Lapua is exceptional typically. I have shot my last box of RWS rifle match and ordered some more but I have not shot yet. I have thought that when will my luck run out on the RWS.??!! It was filling the X ring in my local club with some terrific scores.

What wind flags do you like?

Thanks so much!!
Brian

Hey, Kenny, so good to see you here! We never did get together for that shooting outing last Fall we talked about several times. Now that you're retired we'll have to find a way to burn up some of that spare time you now have. With any luck Winter will be over soon. :D

Doug
Hey Doug! Sorry, I've been swamped since retirement. Got the house done for my sons, now redoing one for my nephew. Booked up until late summer but do want to get with you, Tom and the gang of misfits  Or is that just us?

The 52D is coming along. Hope to shoot it this summer. Still sorting out a scope but can't see a NF for it since it will rarely get shot.

Good to hear from you. Talk to you soon

Kenny

PS: I highly recommend retirement!
