Just picked up a Marlin 17V...Question about scope mounting?

Hello all! I'm officially now part of the .17 HMR club. Was at Walmart last night and they had a Marlin 17V for $179.87 and I couldn't resist. I asked the salesman if it came with scope rings and he said it doesn't because if it did the one in the display case would have them on. Well I could tell it had a dovetail groved reciever built in so I figure it would need those type of rings. They were sold out so I hurried back to the sporting goods store in the mall (just came from there and they only had a 17VS for $350 and I didn't want to spend that much). The only rings they had were some $9.99 no brand rings in medium matte. Get home and open the box to find a package with weaver bottom mounts (didn't know the gun was drilled and tapped). So now I have these weaver mounts (but no rings) and these other dovertail rings that are just high enough for my scope. My question is either setup better then the other? The thing I like about those dovetail rings is that they don't stick out that much like the weaver mounts would since the top of the receiver is narrower then the mounts.

I have the BKL #261 mount on my Marlin 17V and it is rock solid! Yeah, it was $55 but this thing is tough as nails, plus it has that "tacticle" look to it. I wouldn't cut any corners on the sighting system with a rifle like ours that has such a potential for accuracy.

Just my opinion, but a set of $9 rings on a $200 rifle with a $100+ scope seems like the weak link to me.

Bought the same rifle and after looking at a lot of rings I found the burris signature rings that would mount the scope.
It is the Burris Part number 420555. Midsouth is the cheapest but on back order. I ordered from midway and will have tuesday.Scope is simmons atv 4.5-14x40 AO, the AO is a fat one.BKL will not fit unless you buy the risers for the rings ,to espensive. The Burris has the plastic inserts which I like, protects scope and the scope will not slip.Only dove tail on my rifle. If you have to put that rail on your self, use the blue lock tite and make damm sure you get it right the first try.
