June 2018 25 Yard Scope CZ/BRNO Rimfire Benchrest Match

Guidelines:

CZ or BRNO scoped sporters - less than or equal to 9.0 lbs when weighed with the magazine removed. The CZ 452 and 455 Varmint should qualify unless your glass and rings are more than 2 pounds, but as far as BRNO Models 3 and 4 -- sorry guys, you'll have to step up to the 50 yard distance.

Any safe trigger. Maximum magnification of 9x on the scope. (Those with variable scopes set them to 9x or lower).

No aftermarket barrels or stocks - only CZ's original stocks and barrels. There are other BR games on RFC for dramatically altered rifles. We are trying to encourage competition with unmodified or minimally modified scoped CZ sporters. As to custom stock bedding performed on a factory stock, no compound-bedding allowed, pillared or non, and plain pillar bedding is prohibited as well.

Target is the USBR Target (The Green Monster)

22 long rifle

Fired from a benchrest using front and rear support, must be free recoiling (no gun vises), but a bi-pod is fine if the shooter prefers.

Distance to target is 25 yards

Time limit - 1 hour for unlimited sighters and the 25 rounds for score

You can shoot on an indoor range if it is your only option, but please report that fact in your post.

You can post multiple targets if each is fired with a different CZ. For example, a shooter could post one with her CZ Varmint and another with her CZ American and even a third with a scoped Ultra Lux!

Post a pic of your target and the equipment you used in this thread by June 30, 2018.

Honor system, and we couldn't ask for a more honorable bunch. Remember, you can shoot up to four targets and post the highest score of the four.

Wind flags are fine for either the 50 foot open sight match or the the 25 yard scope match. I usually tie a piece of bright streamer or the like to a hammered-in stake.

Use this format to post your score(s):

06/04/2018
210-1X
Deadeye III (Garner Goodwill)
CZ 452 Trainer, Weaver RV-9 scope set at 9x
Wolf Match Target
Cowan front rest, Protektor rear bunny bag
Cloudy with light winds and temps in the low 50s

A homemade scoring/plugging board is helpful:

TARGETS?

Good question!

I finally found an outdoor range with decent benches and 25, 50, and 100 yard targets so that I can compete in some of these games. (I live in downtown Chicago, so finding good outdoor ranges within a reasonable driving distance is a bear.) I only had time to shoot one target at 25 yards today and was humbled to shoot a 240-3x with my 452 American. From following this thread, I thought 248+ scores were easy. :). I'll see if I can do better later this month. And if my 12-year old son can best me. He has before.

JeffRCZ, Everybody underestimates the 25 Yard Green Monster. Most folks on RFC assume that shooting this USBR Target at 25 Yards is so easy that it is beneath them--not even worth the attempt. But for those who do attempt it, they find that it is challenging and good marksmanship practice to hone your skills for almost any shooting endeavor. Your 240-3X is a good score for the first crack at the Monster!

I'm a fanatical squirrel hunter, so I got into this Match as a way of getting ready for squirrel hunting. I think it revived my love for target shooting again and it surely helped my squirrel hunting. But the very best part of Danny Creasy's Matches are the folks who participate and help each other to get better. Everyone involved is a gentleman and all around honorable and sportsmanlike. Even quite a bit of learning going on.

I am still recovering from shoulder surgery to reconnect a torn bicep so I didn't shoot the Monster last month. But I killed three squirrels this morning and soon it will be too hot to squirrel hunt where I live, so I will see if I can still break 240 sometime this Summer.

You are going to have fun with this:)

Thanks

I never take for granted the effort some of our participants have to take to find and travel to an adequate shooting location. I have a 42 minute drive one way to my outdoor shooting club, but it's a beautiful drive through rural Northwest Alabama. The distance involved and the expense of gasoline cause me to carefully plan these shooting trips; I usually make a morning of it. For example, I might take the 452 American or UltraLux and shoot a couple of USBR cards, and then pull my S&W 41 or S&W 617 and practice for our second Saturday handgun silhouette match.

I had never bought the targets before, but now that I have shot a game i can attest that scoring above a 240 is not easy. I consider my 452 american to be a great rifle, but it came in dead last last month with a perfomance in the mid 230s. I am going to put try a pressure point under the barrel on both my 452s to see if that wont help consistency. I put a fixed 36 sightron on my 452 varmint, so it likely wont been participating in this months challenge.

First try for june

I had chance to go to the range this month, missed last month. Shot a 245 6x with my 452fs 22lr .5-8 MPH breeze. I'll see if I can get out again this month. Like Danny ,I have to drive 45min to a little over a hour to get to a range but I have to drive from Huntington beach.ca across southern California AKA. LA to get to ranges.
I'm still building my basic skills and enjoy this fun contest. I'll post later

It is OK to put a pressure point in your stock as long as you don't use permanent bedding compound. I put plastic under the barrel where the barrel meets the receiver. It isn't permanent, but it is still holding, so I'm still shooting. I'm sure it isn't as good as a permanent bedding material like Acraglass, but it is permitted for this Match.

Thats a good idea! :bthumb:

I am going out to the long range tomorrow, so since I dont get down there often if I can do some 25y and 50y shooting I will, but I am going to focus on 200y first then 100y. At my normal range out to 100 isnt a problem, but if I am going to play the 200y game its a long drive. Gonna shoot the .308 at distance too. :)

Once a reclusive squirrel hunter came out from the shadows of the forest canopy to help King Daniel slay the 25-eyed Green Monsters that had invaded the Kingdom of Creasaria. Other knights and warriors came from many lands to fight the many-eyed beasts. And the battles were glorious eye-punching adventures.

But then the hunter's right arm was torn in battle and the local barber cut it open and tied the broken strands back together and wrapped it in an old greasy SK Magazine towel. Underneath the grotesque scars the sinews began to draw into little fist like knots as the arm mended.

And so it came to be that when he tried to slay the Monster this morning he shot 2 '8's' and 2 '9's' in the first two rows. He fled his shooting parapet to take refuge in the Castle as the Green Monster scaled the wall. Carrying his weapon with his left hand and dangling his right arm behind him he slipped down the dark stone corridors to his hiding place. His consolation is in those who still defend the wall and are knocking them dead.

I would like to see some more upper 240's this month and a couple of 250's! Clem-E's off to a good start. Most of the problem with me this morning wasn't really my shoulder, it was my Pogo Stick heartbeat bouncing my crosshairs up and down while I was trying to squeeze the trigger. I can't remember the last time I had cardiovascular excercise. But I need some.

Enjoyed the tale of adventure, SB. Can’t help but think you might enjoy my “Slingshot 8” book.

It’s in the 90s in the a.m. hours as of late. That should get these SK and Eley lubes moving. Hydrate, hold steady, and press gently for some awesome scores in June.

June entry 248/8X

Took my second shot of the month at the GM this morning using some of my remaining stash of RWS R-50 (lot 863). The results were a point higher than last week's so I'm deleting my 6/8/2018 message.

06/11/2018
248/8X
Johnny Johnson
CZ 452 American, Weaver V24 scope set at 9X
RWS R-50
Harris bipod in front, Protektor bag in rear
Sunny, low 60's, no wind

The image of the rifle is from last year.

Looks like stiff competition this month!

I almost feel sorry for the fella who joins in our Match this month thinking 25 Yards is too easy for real men...he's gonna need professional counseling after shooting his first bunch of Green Monsters:(

Usually the competition is for 1st place, but this month the challenge is staying out of last place! Gotta shoot above a 245 to keep from being dead last:bthumb: If that continues, this will be the first month there has been so little room between first and last

I haven't even worked up the courage to keep shooting after the 3rd Row. I'm getting eaten before I make it to the middle of the target. I would throw the unfinished target away, but I'm too cheap to not use the un-shot bulls.

When I have a target like that, I always cut the unblemished rows into strips of 5 bulls and save them. The next time I go to the range I tack a 5 bull strip on either
side of the new Green Monster target and use them to warm up. I have a lot of five bull strips left over from both the 25 yd. and 50 ft. matches............:D
