This is my first attempt at setting one of these up online. If anyone has any suggestions let me know and I will keep them in mind for future matches. This month we will shoot bullseye targets at 25 and 50 feet, with an optional third round using another bonus target at 25 feet. These are each separate matches; participate in any that you like, or try them all. You may use as many rimfire handguns as you like.

Match #1: 25 feet Match

1) Use the 25 foot target .pdf attached. You will need Adobe Reader to view this file, which is free and you probably have already. The best thing would be to save to your computer, then print from Adobe Reader.

Print the targets on 8.5x11 paper, at 100% size with no page scaling. The 5-ring should be 4" in diameter and the 10-ring should be 5/8" in diameter. Measure to make sure the target is correct.

2) Print 1 copy. Print others for practice if you like. BUT, only one record shot page, so declare it before you shoot it. No shooting 4-5 pages, and taking the best one.

3) Measure off 25 feet from the face of the target to the line you put your toes on. If you don't have a 25 foot tape, use a ruler or yardstick and measure off a 25 foot piece of string, and take this with you the range.

4) You may shoot one or two handed, or both. No rests, no aiming braces, etc. This is an "offhand event".

4) Any optics you want. My experience is that the red dot shooters do better, but we shall see.

5) Take as long as you want to fire 5 shots at each bull.

6) Score by the best edge that a bullet hole touches. If the hole touches the line of a higher score ring, it counts. No scoring plugs are used since this is thin printer paper.

7) No more than 5 shots should be in each bull. If there are more than 5 shots in a single bull, count down starting from the best score, until you have only 5 shots. This means that if one bull has 7 shots in it, and another bull only has 3 shots in it, you would count as "zeros" the 2 best shots in the "7-shot bull", and every thing else would be counted normally.

Match #2: 50 feet Match

1) Use the 50 foot target .pdf attached.

3) Measure off 50 feet from the face of the target to the line you put your toes on. If you don't have a 50 foot tape, use a ruler or yardstick and measure off a 50 foot piece of string, and take this with you the range.

4) You may shoot one or two handed, or both. No rests, no aiming braces, etc. This is an "offhand event".

4) Any optics you want.

Match #3: Bonus target at 25 feet

A one or two handed match, shot at 25 feet, using the "Bonus Target" (Dynamite), also attached.

The total possible points for this match is 100. Fire 2 shots at each fuse. Scoring is as follows: Severing the fuse is worth 10 points. Clipping, but not severing the fuse is worth 5 points. A miss is worth zero. Hitting the "Dynamite" with a bullet voids all shots fired on that target. If while shooting at one fuse, you hit a different pack of "Dynamite", it still voids any points you may have scored on that target.

TARGETS:
RFC PISTOL 50 FOOT 1-2008.pdf
RFC PISTOL 25 FOOT 1-2008.pdf

Your links worked fine and printed out to exactly your dimensions given. I will do my best to get out in January, outside unfortunately, and try at least the 50' match.

Thanks for trying to make a go of the fun pistol matches. Hopefully it will work out. May be a little slim till april or so and we get some warmer weather.

Unruly,

I just wanted to check - when I printed those targets out, the 25- and 50-ft are the same... I just want to be sure.

And the bonus dynamite target says 50-ft on the bottom, but you have 25-ft in your text.

I presume the 25-ft is correct.

Hopefully a warmer day will come by up here in northern VT. It's snowing right now! :)

Yes, you are correct, both targets are the same. Again you are correct about the bonus target. Originally I thought I would have it being shot at 50 feet, after looking at that I changed my mind and apparently didn't get the target changed..:banghead3 . I went back and forth on this setup and changed targets and my mind more times than I can recall. I tried to make it good for different levels of shooters.

If the rain holds off tomorrow...(Saturday).....I'll give it a go with my Buckmark.

Our pistol range has lines marked off at 7, 15, 25, 50 and 75 feet. We shoot from the same line, but can possition out target stands at whatever distance we want out to 25 yards. This takes away any need for a tape measure...(one less thing to stuff in the range bag).....(more room for targets & ammo).....;)

Unruley....I assume we can only submit one target for each game for the month....?

That is correct! To clarify that some, you may only post one scored target/set of targets per pistol. In other words you may shoot more than one pistol and post their individual targets. We will go this route for now, but this may be changed in the future depending on what everyone thinks??

Unruley....if I may offer some advice concerning the targets.

I normally print all my targets out on card stock paper, standard printer paper tends to tear a lot around the impact area, as where the card stock paper does not. Also, if it's a damp day like it was here today, the ink tends to run and / or smear on printer paper

I buy card stock paper by the reem at the local Staples Office Supply, and get it in manilla (off white) as it works better with my aging eyesight.

I mention this because I ran out of card stock, and printed up a couple of your match targets on standard white printer paper. I too have my pistol sights set at 25 yards, and wanted to see where my shots would land at 25 and 50 feet, had they been targets I wanted to score, it would have been difficult with the way the bullets tore through the paper instead of punching through cleanly......

Looks like I'll be using some of that "Kentucky Windage" myself come next month......;)

I too normally use the card stock for my targets. I have found another option, i use cardboard sprayed with a light coat of spray adhesive. It helps hold the target still and makes the holes cleaner. It is also removable and re-usable! I don't think it will matter if shooters wish to use card stock, so you may use either..

The spray adhesive idea sounds good, one of the problems I have is, many of our steel target stands have been either shot up, or bent out of shape, and the cardboard backers won't sit flat in them. Because of this, stapling up targets usually leaves space between the paper and the cardboard...result is tearing around the bullet holes.

I always liked using Homasote soundboard as a baker, but that stuff got too expensive a couple years ago, used to buy a 4' X 8' sheet for $3.00 at the lumber yard, now it's almost $20.00 a sheet....

I have a target holder my father made. It is a horizontal piece of wood with 1 vertical piece attached to it with a piece of sharpened rebar epoxied into the base of it. The horizontal piece has a metal spring clip attached to it to hald the target. It looks like an upside down "L". I'm getting ready to make another one "T" shaped with a clip on either side for holding 2 targets.. Of course my range is my yard, so I don't have any rules other than mine and my wife's..

A good source of target backer material is those blasted "Vote For Me" signs that crop up everywhere at election time. :shakehead
They're just like ordinary cardboard except they're made from plastic.
You also beautify the landscape by removing the darn things. ;)

Went up to the range yesterday with the Ruger Mk II pistol to run some practice and the gun is malfunctioning. It double fires and sometimes doesn't cock the hammer. I've had the occastional problem with it and it's now so bad that I can't use it. It has to go back to Ruger for service (if they want it).
Looks like I have to use the Single Six for the January pistol match. No biggy but I just bought new grips and sights for the Mk II.

Tom L., Northern VA (lindertw)
Ruger MKIII 22/45
box stock pistol - zero modifications (~900 rounds down range as of today's range visit, measured 4lb_4oz trigger pull)
stock sights
Federal 36gr value pack ammo (maroon box)
Two-handed, both eyes open
NRA Indoor Range (Chantilly, VA)

no excuses, I'm still learning - I need to work more on slowing down too ;)

Arrows on target indicate which way is up (I would shoot one, then flip it over to shoot the other).

I think you "underscored" yourself, Tom. On your top 25 footer I get 44, not 43& on the bottom 50 footer I get 27, not 25. This is just eyeballing - with a plug gauge I think you might pick up a point or two on the other 50 footer too. Remember this is a "best edge" target - all you gotta do is touch the line.....
